Best tire for snow crawling? Like the title says I'm looking for a good snow tire preferably for a 1.9" wheel and 4.50-4.75" tire height. I got a set of RC4WD Baja claws 4.75" which are ok but the lugs aren't very tall so the snow tends to pack up very easily and it just spins till it high centers the rig. I tried cutting half of the tire foam out so there's more tire on the snow for more flotation but I think a different tire would be better. Snow at my place is already 6"+ so it will high center easily if I'm spinning tires. |
Re: Best tire for snow crawling? I don’t know how cold it is there. Here it is very cold and the tires freeze. The traction is prettty much coming from the tread alone, and not performing at its optimum in that department either My sons SCX10 does well on Boggers. I like the Goodyear MTR’s. Taller the better to increase clearance. If you are using the rigs windshield as a plow, that little bit of clearance becomes irrelevant. I imagine the Hyrax is decent. Haven’t tried any, but snow chains must work well for crawling in snow. They certainly do in real life. Saved my ass many times |
Re: Best tire for snow crawling? You're asking an awful lot from a tire that small. You need flotation and some height to allow clearance when bagged down with soft foam. I run 2.2 pitbull xors with super soft foams with great success. They are a bit tall but once mounted they are rather short due to the bagged out tire making a larger footprint. If tires are freezing stiff in the cold it's time to stop running that brand of tire. |
Re: Best tire for snow crawling? I ran Pro Line Predator TSL XLs last year in the snow. 4.5 CI foams with the outer stage removed for a larger footprint. If the snow is crusty on top, thats ideal. Powder...ease into the throttle, build momentum and let off as soon as forward progress is lost. Back up and do it again. |
Re: Best tire for snow crawling? hmmm 1:1s have different compounds for winter tires. I wonder... would a RC company ever go that far? Probably not but one can dream lol although we do have tracks specifically for winter so maybe Also 1:1 related I recall 2 trains of thought. 1: skinny tall tire to dig down through the snow but depth has to be shallow to work 2: very wide tire to "float" on top of the surface. I'd be interested to try out a Voodoo pin tire. but dont listen to me I'm just rambling. |
Re: Best tire for snow crawling? Its just past freezing temp here, I know the only chance to actually go anywhere is in packed down snow or crusty stuff. Powder is impossible I find with RC's to get through. I snow wheel in 1:1 size trucks so I know snow conditions and when it's possible. The tires are going on a TF2 so running anything over 4.75" is a stretch even with the foam removed. I got some 4.75" TSL's I can try but i'd prefer not to chop the foams since they are from my twin hammers buggy. OR this is an excuse to buy a monster truck for super wide and tall tires for the snow :mrgreen: Quote:

Pick up a set of 4.3 Pro Line TSLs. Those would be quite a bit easier to fit on a TF2. But regardless of tire, there is only so much a scale rig can do once the snow gets past a couple of inches. |

Re: Best tire for snow crawling? Would you consider paddle sand tires? IDK if they would work or not. My local shop had a set for sale, just cant seem to find time to get in there. Then again we haven't had a measurable amount of snow yet. If and when I get a set Ill let you know. |
Re: Best tire for snow crawling? Depends on the conditions of the snow. A real snow tire works by holding onto snow, not clearing it. Offroad is very different than on road. You either want to float above the top crust or dig down to solid ground, land in the middle and you're hooped. There is no one size fits all for offroad snow unfortunately. |

On the X4 with portals and these trax the clearance under the axle housing is significantly improved, which is great for snow. Ultimately it means you are pushing less snow. That’s in combination with some good voltage pairs up nicely for snow performance. |
