| Venting tires affects tire performance
Hey Guys and Gals. Bought a new RTR capra recently. My first upgrade was to put on some Proline Hyrax 1.9 x 4.75 tires on aluminum beadlock wheels. After putting on the new tires and wheels. I was having major problems with the tires folding over when cornering (Especially down hills). The air was escaping the tire and not re-inflating with the beadlock rims. I decided to vent the tires in three places by sandwiching the tire between two pieces of wood and drilling a 3/32 hole through tire in three places on the tread of the tire. These vents corrected most of the tire folding problem. With the tires vented, they are now reinflating properly with the beadlock rims. This cured most of the tire folding issue. Very happy with the new tires and wheels now. Next time will consider drilling vent hole in rim instead of tire because I don't drive in water and think this will prolong tire life. |

Sounds like you've found a good solution for your crawler. If you decide to drill the rim, tap some threads in the hole. That way you can install a screw to plug it up if you decide to run somewhere wet. |

Welcome to the site! I like venting tires before wheels because wheels are expensive and tougher to fix. Also, venting the tires, theorectically, allows you to "fling" water out of the tires by centrifugal force. |

Also, venting the tires is usually preferred when running full tire closed cell foams or dual foam setups where the inner foam is closed. Ie, air can't travel through the closed cell foam to get to the hold in the wheel. Can use sharp tip on a soldering iron (on and hot) for a better hole that won't rip as easy too. I adjusted my reply above. I said air "can" travel through closed cell foam, that is incorrect, just a typo.
