| Bending square tube
I need some help. I want to make a frame/chassis for a scale build out of 1/2" ID steel sq tube. All I have is a small propane torch and a small torch for brazing. How do you guys bent this stuff ? Do you use alum or steel ? Help please. |

I use 1/2" square tube put it in a vise & heat it to bend it. Don't have a bandsaw so I used a roto-zip w/a 31/2" cut-off wheel Hope that helps |

I've tried to heat it up but it just wont bend. All I have are the hand held bottle type torches though. No oxy/acetl set up.

Buy a tank of Mapp gas. It will work with your current propane tip and it burns much hotter. Here is how I did it... http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...+bending&hl=en |

I think Propolene, 3400 degrees is the hottest thing you can get without a torch setup. Correct me if I'm wrong, you might want to give that a shot.

You just have to play the waiting game with the heat. Holding it perfectly still seems to work the best. You just want the metal to get really hot almost red. You will definitly feel the difference when bending. The single flame plumbing tips never worked for me. The Tri flame benzomatic is great.

| Here are the pics
Well thanks to everyone I got the frame done today. I picked up a new larger vice and it worked great!! I'll post up a pic or 2 later. I still need to cut it to length and in half. This will get done after I drill all the mounting holes. Last edited by reddevildemo; 08-21-2008 at 02:44 PM. |

| LOL, It was pretty easy after the new vice. I was using one off of my drill press, just not bug enough to hold the force of bending. I'll see when I'm done if I have enought stock left. Stuff was cheap, $5 for a 3' pc. |

I don't really need one. I was assuming that you were going to use it as a square tube not as a C. Thanks anyway.
