6061 is the most commonly used. However, 2011 would be a nice one to work with as well. Mic 6, I don't quite remember but thought this was cast, precision ground plate?

Mic 6 is cast plate, also called tooling plate, not really what you are looking for on a lathe project. 6061 and 2011 would be good as RCALLOYS said.

Go to www.mcmaster.com and search for aluminum and they give you a list of a bunch of alloys and their properties.

Why do you want soft?

The problem with machining aluminum is the softer, gummy alloys. They stick and grab on tooling.

The harder the aluminum alloy the easier it is to machine. 6061 T6 and 7075 machine like a dream.

Actually 6061 is far from soft. There is no merit in producing things out of soft Al IMO anyway, as Ace stated, stick with the harder alloys as they are not only easier to machine, but will inevitable work better in their given application.

Purely out of interest, what size lathe will you be machining said alloys on? The reason I ask is that if the reason you want soft alloys is because you don't think your machine will handle harder stuff, there are a number of tool choices that will alow you to machine much harder grades with relative ease and little loading on the machine.
