| Why is this not working for me??
I went to day to napa and got some 1/4 inch brake line and some of the mapp gas. Not the mapp pro junk but the old kind. And some of there flux coted brazeing rods. It seems that the mapp is just not gettin it hot I held it there for ever it will onley burn the flux off the rods also. do I need the sett up with the reglaters and stuff? Right now I just have the mapp gas bottle with a regler end on it..

You need to try some different brazing rod it sounds like. Try some Harris Safety Silv rod and get some of there white flux to go with it. It flows nicely and the mapp gas you have is plenty hot enough for it. |

Everyone that I know of that brazes brake line, uses Harris Safety Silv flux paste, regular old Mapp gas and plain steel filler rod. I've even seen some use an old coathanger as a filler rod. Make sure everything is super clean and bare steel before applying the flux. |

Sounds like you got some oxy-fuel welding rod (read: mild steel rod), not brazing rod. edit: plain ole' mapp gas brazes effortlessly for me, no o2 necessary and while cleaning the tubing beforehand makes for a faster/easier/cleaner braze that requires no finishing, you can easily burn the coating off the tubing with the torch before applying flux/brazing rod too. I've used the same setup you are describing and it worked okay for me. Try preheating your brazing rod before it touches the metal. Thats how I do it, and I've even been able to braze like that with regular old propane. That is if you have the brass rod, not the steel rod like someone else mentioned.

Let me describe this better. I am onley use to brazeing with and oxy/act(Im not for sure if that is the right thing for it) and with 1/8 brazeing rods use powder flux. I got the 3/32 rods to day the small ones. with the white coted flux. All the rod would do to day is melt the flux off and turn the rod black. I am thinking it might be something with my tip. Cause I tryed the colthanger and it got really hot but my brake line would't get hot enouf. I just used a old bet up tip I am thinkin I need to get a new tip. |

Pics? there shouldnt be any reason the brake line isnt getting hot enough as long as you got flame. it sounds like the rod and/or flux is wrong. |

outside air temp will also cause problems.got back from the k yesterday. had a hell of a time brazing the brake line on the yard truck.had to use a cutting torch to get it hot enough.mapp wont hang when its cold as hell out. was the rod gold color before it turned black?
