Help With Drill Press

Well I finally got a drill press. My eyes arent as good as they once were... and Im only 19...

Got that tonight. Pretty nice for $120.

I have a quick question though.

Will I need special drill bits for this? Or is there something anyone would recomend.

I have a few good drill bits. But it couldnt hurt to buy a set.

Thanks.

Nope no special drill bits just normal ones. If you our looking to upgrade your existing set. Go with some of the gold colored ones they are titanium coated and stay sharp a while longer. If you see cobalt drill bits they are the best you can buy. Me I seriously just get cheap high speed drill bits from harbor freight. I bought then in bulk then painted them so I know which size is which.

I use only three sizes most of the time.
1/8 for drilling thru holes for 3mm or 4-40 screws
3/32 for drilling holes that I can tap with a 6-32 tap.
1/16 for taping 4-40 holes or 3mm holes.

Good Idea.

The HSS (High Speed Steel) drill bits are fine for general applications, the cobalt drills are meant for drilling hard materials.

I cant find a metric drill bit set anywhere!!!

Mnster 09-10-2005 11:11 PM

I don't think they make metric drill bits. I know they make them in numbers and letters and fractions.

Although not very common in your neighborhood ace hardware or mom and pop surplus store, they do make metric drill bits. ;-) Here, just took a second to find ;-) For RC stuff,I just use my mic's and find the closest size for the bolt I'm using. For anything else,I'll have it machined out,buy or borrow the appropriate bit to get things to fit the way they should.

You can get metric drill bits from grainger.com. There's a couple of there wharehouses near me, but never bought of the website.
Just thought I mention it because that was the only place I could find metric bits a few years ago.
