| NO welding/brazing chassis
Hi, I'm making my first crawler this spring. When I make a custom chassis out of alluminum, can I make it using L shaped brackets instead of welding/brazing. I'm only thirteen and am not aloud to weld. Also, how strong will this be. does anyone have any experience in this? Sry if this is in the wrong category. Any help is appreciated.

I constructed my first three chassis out of alu plate and L channel. Plenty strong for a crawler, just locktight all the nuts. And you should be aloud to weld at 13 unless you have trouble with paying attention to what you are doing. How can you ever learn if you are never aloud to do? P.S. Allowed is proper sp. |

Thanks. Is 3/8" alluminum thick enough/to thick/ not thick enough? Yea I agree with you about letting me weld. My mom's kind of crazy about me using any kind of torch.

i first welded about 6 months ago. only did it twice too. not that long ago, maybe 2 weeks ago was the last time i did it. i was at a friends house and we were working on his tracktor and we had to make a plate and weld it to the frame. even his dad, who welds almost every day, said it was a perfect weld for being my second time.

My dad's going to teach me to weld. I don't think I'll weld my first chassis only because I don't have experience. Thanks for the help. I'm 14, typed the wrong age.

I'm a new comer to this sport...plan on building a crawler this summer. I want to learn as much as possible before I get started. Do you think that rivets would work as well? Any oppinion would be awesome.

First time I welded I was around 7, I broke my bike and when I asked my dad to fix it he said " I'll show you how" as far as rivets go, thats what I'm using now and they work fine. get aluminium rivets and lots of them for all the "redesigns" (aka oop's) |

I would suggest Screws/Nuts over Rivets, easier to change things...

What type of chassis are you looking to make? A scaler ladder frame, TVP (most common), tuber, or something else? None of my chassis have been welded. All cut out using a hand saw. People have made tuber without welding. My latest Axial based chassis: |

My first weld was at age 7 granted it looked horrible, that was 10 years ago haha. tell your mom you know a 7 yr old who was allowed to weld. just do a TVP chassis and all you need is a scroll saw |

I learned to weld doing tunnel work in Colorado most of it was overhead embed plates, when you can weld over head without burning yourself up everything else is easy. |
