| Makerbot Ind. - CupCake CNC http://makerbot.com/ Any of you guys seen this rapid prototype homebrew? Can you say Instant Scale Doodads!?!?!? The travel is a bit small but it would make a bunch of stuff we like. Micro-sized stuff should all be easily doable. It's almost like they know I want to spend $1000 on one.......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzDZLwaDzys Pretty cool application of how this thing can be a great tool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBzyZSVK_Gs&NR=1 Last edited by pigeonfarmboy; 01-28-2010 at 01:48 AM. |

I was just thinking about these the other day. There was a big movement online a few years ago to make a self replicating machine like this. Im not sure how accurate it would be but I dont know how far the extruder technology has advanced. It was pretty primitive looking output last time i did the research.

I saw that awhile ago too. I'd be very interested in knowing how well it works. We have a 3D Printer at work, so I never thought about buying one.

This thing is pretty cool, and doesn't look like it costs that much to get. I can already think of some cool things we can make with this. |

Just a less accurate version on this http://www.dimensionprinting.com/3d-...ng-uprint.aspx Still really cool though |

The engineers and I at work have been contimplating one because we get offers from Alibre all the time. We just need to convince management as it alomost more of a toy in our industry.

The full assembly is available in Solidworks. A lot of the parts were designed to be printed (learn what a fillet is people!!!) but can easily be machined. The mechanical construction would be no problem, and if I can get some help from toybuilder, it should be a pretty easy project. I can definitely see it coming in handy down in my Underground Lair. |

That looks pretty interesting. My question is if someone had say a Sherline CNC would it be possible to "toss" the spindle unit and throw a dispensing rig on there and have a 3D printer with full 3-4 axis control or no |

The surface finish of my employer's $30k 3d printer is pretty poor so i can't imagine a $1k unit performing any better. We farm out printing if a customer is going to see it. In my eyes $1k towards a mill would be a better use of funds.

cool! I found this after watching your vid, Small to tiny facemasks - YouTube, could also be useful in the scale section. They can do full heads in many scales, maybe put my face on wild willy. hahaha. thanks for sharing! | |

I have several printers here at work. One is the Bits For Bytes printer (same as the MakerBot). It's nice but you have to mess around with it quite a bit. If you want to print scale things it's super easy and they would look pretty good. Resolution can go down to 0.25mm/layer for smaller things. Larger things will be printed at 1mm/layer. Most of the time it's ABS so you can take the part, sand it down and then paint it when you're done. If you have your settings wrong for temp/feed/speed the part will unravel like a sweater. The other thing is the parts aren't super strong. You're not making a working part for suspension, all cosmetic mostly.

I've got a high end, high resolution rapid prototyping system in my office and have often thought it would be nice to make some goodies for the RC. It prints in 0.0005" layers so the parts that come off it it have a great finish and it's capable of very fine detail. Good thing I'm not a scaler or I'd have loads of goodies on the Wraith...
