Default Drilling into stainless steel

I have some 5mm dowel pins that I want to drill a hole through. I made a small flat spot on it for the drill bit to sit on and made a tiny dent on it with a scriber, oiled a drill bit and started drilling. I didn't have the really small bits, so I only started with a 1.5mm bit. I couldn't really apply a lot of pressure on it before the drill would wander off, so it pretty much just sat there drilling for a minute and made absolutely no progress.

I know many of you have drilled out your TLT axle input shafts to put the Stampede yoke screw through it, so I have to ask... what's the trick?

:?

A sharp drill bit maybe I used my drill press on mine, I don't remember. But using the hand drill is better for guideing the drill straight. They where tough just get a new high quality drill bit and drill slow.

Never drilled TLT axles but in general when drilling hard stuff keep the rpm slow and don't be afraid to put some pressure on the drill.

Lots of hard to drill metal work hardens. If you don't push the drill a little (pressure) the material hardens and your drill cooks.

Keep oil on the bit too.

If all that doesn't help I find cussing helpful.

A carbide drill would be good, but most likely you'd have to order it.

A hand drill is the one that you crank with your hand?

I think he means a hand-held power drill, as opposed to a drill press.

Oh ok. I already gave up on that hand-held power drill method. Since the drill bit is only 1.5mm, it doesn't like being leaned on too hard.

I've shelved this tranny design for now and I'm working on another design that doesn't involve drilling holes onto stainless steel rods. Might go back to it later when I have more suitable tools.

Cobalt split point drills work nice in S.S.
