I've been using a patio paver stone, but recently got a large piece of steel that I'll be using.

I used an old full tower steel computer case. I took off one side and screwed it down to the top to make a table. Then the open case was used to hold my torch, solder, and flux when not in use.

I use a piece of granite I got a while back when I was a grave digger. Any place that sells grave stones or granite counter tops will have broken or chipped pieces of granite laying around that you can get cheep if not free.

terrible idea for brasing...trust me i know...
when the mapp gas hits it its starts exploding. litterally. flaming hot peices start shooting off like pop corn.
i was watching how its made, and they actually talked about thats exactly how they make granite if you want a rough or matte finish, they would hit it with a flame.

X2
We do a lot of work in the shop with an Ox/Ac torch. I always cringe when I see a new guy taking the torch to a part on the concrete floor. Big pieces will start shooting out when it gets hot enough.

WOW, good to know. Been useing it for acouple years now without anything like that ever happening. I never have the heat concentrated on my work surface and while it does get warm from time to time it cools off way faster than the steel surface I was useing.

I use solid piece of 1/4" x 12" x 12" asbestos. It's a compound that will not release fibres unless broken or cut. I wish I could figure out who sells them as people keep trying to borrow it.
