Default silver soldering question

I was wondering what would be better, I'm working on a custom internal cage for my hpi bronc and was wondering if i should make mounts and bolt a custom cage to my scx10 frame, or if jointing it right to the frame would be better, i can understand working on it might be easier if the cage is removable, but working space isnt much of a concern to me, and i dont plan on changing the body to a different one. To me I would rather just joint it to the frame, any other suggestions? thanks

It is going to be stronger welded to the frame, but if you think you are going to change bodies a bolt on cage is your best bet. I would say most of the cages on here are permanent attached, but I have seen a few bolt on's as well. I brazed mine on because I knew it was going to stay that way.

I myself want to do a bolt on cage on the back of my SCX just for the simple fact if I did want to change the body. What my plan was, was to put a flat flange on the end of the tube where it makes contact with the frame and have bolts on either side of the tube. Ive seen the bolt ons here and most have a flange with one bolt on one side of the tube. I figured having a bolt on both sides would be stronger, and really I think a brazing weld would break before a stainless bolt. Its really your preference and your plan in the future for that chassis, like you said you dont plan on changing so weld away.

I've used the flux coated rod but I prefer the brush on paste and non coated silver solder. With the paste you can get it in between the parts so the solder flows a little better.

You should pick up a pack of 4 small welder magnets. They are small triangles with a 90, 45, 30 angles. Best 20 I ever spent when it comes to brazing. I also prefer the brush on flux and rolled safety silver. I tried the coated stuff, but it never gave me as clean a joint as the other. If you take your time and create tight joints you don't need much silver.

Not sure if I should start a new post or add to this one. My question is Lenox Premium Silver Lead Free Solder the same as Harris Stay-Brite kit?

Decent question, I've tried a few of the "lead free silver solders" and have had poor results.
I have yet to try the harris, thus don't have a good comparison.

i would advise the harris brush on flux with the harris safetysilv.

with the brush on flux you can control exactly where the harris will flow and like war pig said get the flux good and deep so the silver solder flows deep inside the joints. the harris brush on flux will liquify to a wet/clear state right before you should hit the joint with the rod and flow the solder, which is nice.

its remarkably easy to braze with just a mapp torch and the harris stuff once you get familiar with how hot to get things and get the feel of how the solder flows with the heat.

Ebay usually has kits with the silver solder and the correct flux. The only other place I know of would be welding supply places either online or there may be one close to you.

How small are they? Got a link?
I need something adjustable that I can use as a jig. Magnets would work well as long as they are strong but small enough to be out if the way.

I bought a kit from the local hobby shop but just seemed like a very little amount of solder. My Home depot did not carry so I can order. I will have to check out ebay. There is a local welding supply all of 8 miles away I will also check out. Thanks for all the input.
