Stuck set screw and hex key broke in it! I need a little help. I have a set screw I got stuck in a brand new aluminum LCC knuckle. Coolest part is I broke off the hex key of the wrench in the screw. I then drilled and tapped all the others for 3 mil. but I still have the issue of what to do with the one set screw stuck in there. I tried in a less than capable way to also drill the whole thing out to fit but that did not go so well and I tired and just finished the project. The truck is running just fine but it is eating at me that this screw is stuck and my knuckle ain't coming back off without it. Sooo. With that in mind I am going to remove the c and try to drill it again to a 3 mil spec. Any other bright ideas though? |
Why is it stuck? Loctite? If so, heat that bad boy up then try again... |
I am thinking it might be loctite but to be my official answer is "I cannot answer your question as it might incriminate me.";-) |
You might be able to use a Dremel Tool with a cut-off wheel and cut a small slot into the setscrew so you can use a flat screwdriver to remove it. |

I think he's saying that the hex bit is broken off in it still. If that's the case, I'd try what gonzo said. |
Heat could also loosen the setscrew since the C is alloy and the screw is steel. The alloy will expand more. Easy to damage the C by overheating them though, it will screw up the temper for sure. If they are quality enough to be tempered that is. |
I know this might be sacrilege but, Take it to your local fabrication/machine shop, have them deal with it."thumbsup" |
Oh, no Cawford. That kindof talk will/should do several things. 1. Get you banned from at least this part of the forum. 2. Prevent me from personally picking up some "charactor" or bodily damange. 3. Cost much less in the long run by not damaging the C. All of which are not a good thing.:ror: |
a BFH should do the trick:lmao::lmao: but in all seriousness drill it out of there. your gonna have to start with a small bit and work your way up. |
how about a left handed drill bit, and unscrew that sucker. http://www.harborfreight.com/13-piec...set-95146.html But just wondering...how deep down is the set screw into the knuckle? I know they go aways in the plastic ones. |
It is pretty far down in there and the bummer is the head of the hex key breaking off. I do plan to drill it out tomorrow. As of right now it is all working out and I got other setup challenges to work out with this thing. This is going to get stuck on the weekend to do list. |
Is the screw so deep that you cant remove the pin? If not then just drill another M3 hole on the other side. But if it is too deep try drilling it out. In our machine shop we have had similar problems in the past but usually since we have multiple details ordered at once, we just trash that one.:lmao: Not the case with your LCC though.:ror: |
