| bought some 3/16 stainless rod, tapping for revo ends?
well i bought some 3/16 stainless rod to make some links for my xr10, i thought i'd be able to thread them to 4mm, but found out they are a little too large to tap. is it possible to make this work with revo ends, or did i waste the money on the 3/16 rod? i'm looking to do this on the cheap. if it's gonna cost too much, i will just wait til i can afford to buy a premade set or titanium ones. sorry if something like this has been posted before, i searched and searched and can't seem to find an answer to my question. |

Well you are in a bit of a pickle. 8-32 is the correct size to run with the revo ends and the 3/16 is too large to thread externally and too small to thread internally. The only option I can see would be to braze the proper set screws to the ends but I cant say how long that would last. |

i kinda had a feeling that's the kind of answer i was going to get. oh well, i got it super cheap so i'm not too upset about it |

10-24 threads. My aluminum uppers are that way. I just drilled the rodends out slightly. I know a few people running similar setups on their super with no failure. It will be less likely to pull from the rodends due to the more coarse thread

You dont have to drill them , just tap them. Makes em good and tight , never had a failure.

| I did this with stainless tubing. I turned down 8-32 stainless all-thread to fit, then silver soldered them in place. The joint worked flawlessly but the tubing was not up to the task, and my XR bent them like pretzels over time.

| I stuck a 5mm tap in there then screwed the allthread in. It's been very strong for me, so far.

I just take my 3/16 steel rod,grind it down with the bench grinder till it's about the right size. Then I use a die to put threads on it.

i thought about doing something like that, but just ended up threading it to 10-24 and it's worked great |

this is the best i've got right now, i'm at work. i can try to get some better pics when i get home. one of the nice things is that 10-24 is 24 threads per inch, and since an inch is 25mm, one thread is ~1mm and revo rod ends are about 11mm deep, so i did about 10 threads and it was just right to keep them from bottoming out. |

That is awesome! I'm going to buy some 6061 3/16 alloy rod for steering links on my wraith and other stuff. I can't stand paying tons of money for links when I can just make them easily. I mean I have all the tools to thread and bend these things, so I might as well make them. Best part is that 6061 3/16 rod is only 6$ for 6ft I'm at work also. Doing a semi annual maintenance on a Recip Gas Compressor POS! Thanks |

I made my links today. I ended up using some 3/16 steel rod instead of the 6061 because it was only 2.50$ for 3ft. I did it differently. I used Revo Rod ends drilled out with an 11/64 drill bit. Then I cut threads onto the 3/16 rod with a 5mm die. Worked perfectly and strong as can be. $2.50 Sure beats $18 for some of the available links. |

nice! i thought about doing something like that but i didn't want to have to remove a bunch of material from the revo ends and make them any weaker. you'll have to post up about how it goes and how well they hold up!

thanks man! they've held up awesome, haven't had any ends break off or strip out, so i'd say it's a great way to do it. the only problem i've had is with the fact that 3/16 is rather large for a 10-24 die it tends to break or dull the die really fast if you don't have a high quality one, AKA NOT one from home depot |
