| Brazing sold rod
Any tips on how to braze solid rod as opposed to brake line. I will be working with 1/4" amd 5/16" solid cold rolled rod. |

No different just takes a bit more to heat up.

Yeah same as tubing.. Just need more heat or hold it there alot longer.. A good map gas tip will do well if you don't have oxy/ace tanks.. The more precise the tip is the quicker it'll heat and make sure you heat both pieces evenly J-bird |

| Re: Brazing sold rod The process is the same as any other brazing. If you are brazing any tube to solid rod watch where your tip is and how hot each piece gets. Solid rod takes longer to heat but its not bad. Take your time and practice on scrap to get your timing and get to know what your material looks like when it reaches the right temp. The videos got me started but it cant compare to hands on and seeing it first hand. Practice practice. Its worth it.

| Re: Brazing sold rod sorry man but there is no damn way a Mapp cylinder is going to get the solid rod hot enough to get a good braze joint, it's gonna take oxy/acetylene with a small tip, flux and some bronze filler rod to make a nice solid joint. There's a reason the Harris silver rod is called 'silver solder', it's because it's only making a solder joint, not a braze joint.

While I agree, I've built a bunch of stuff out of solid brass rod using cheap solder and propane, and those joints have held up very well for the most part. But that's brass.

MAPP can do the job very well. Heat the rods that need to be joined until red hot, then test the spot by touching the brazing rod to see that it melts and flows smoothly. Make the solid rods hot enough so when you touch the brazing rod to them, they melt the brazing rods. Practice makes perfect. |

i ususally tack it in place with my mig, then follow up with my turbo torch, sine the mig welds don't melt, the braze flow right into them. I'm looking into getting a remote setup with a larger mapp gas tank.

Never had trouble w mapp/solid rod. Beat the piss out of my front bumper on Parkers courses for 3hrs. Bent the rod but all joints held strong.
