Default Tire Chains 101!!!! step by step. Picture Heavy!!

Ok I decided to write up on how to make chains for any size tire!!!
Ok first off lets start with the basics.

I used Jack Chain #16 zinc plated i bought 20 feet for about $12

Ok so the first thing you will need to do is measure the inner diameter of where you would like the chain to wrap around. Once you have the diameter find the circumfrence. i.e. Diameter x Pi = circumfrence.

those were the measurements i chose to use. So take the circumfrence and measure the jack chain to the circumfrence then round UP to the nearest full link! I took it to 23 links total.
Write everything down as you go for reference. you will need the diameter for the next step.
Now you need to minus the inner diameter from the outer diameter of the
entire wheel.

The length that you have there will be added to the width to get the
length of the runs

Size: 39.0 KB

Name: runs.jpg
Views: 1410
Size: 166.4 KB

Note!!! i removed on link from this measurement to 7 links not 8.

Size: 27.0 KB

In this case make sure that you round to the closest link i rounded up which did not work for me.
During this instructional i only used 6 runs but upped them to 8 runs. So total length per wheel was about 3.5 feet not 3 feet.

next start hooking everything together

Size: 36.5 KB

This project takes about 2 hours to complete for four wheels.
Here is the final product. I connected the ends of the outside chains like the runs. The inside i connected with zipties. Everything works very well.

Ok so here are some very helpful tips.
Mark the ends of the long chains with marker or something incase you move the chains around too much and loose the ends.

Build a rig 4 nails spaced the length of the long chains and short chains so it doesnt get knocked around and keeps the chains from twisting too much.

The tires i used were 1.9 prolines so that you can use the exact same measurements.

Man I wanted to go so bad. I haven't got to meet all you guys out that way.
I went to try my chains last night then my rear drive broke the second I got out.

foratm, excellent write-up and pictures. Makes it easy to run through.

Have you gotten any real use out of the chains? If so, how have they been holding up? Do they help in snow, ice, mud? Do you think they're better than just tires for traction?

If anyone else did these, any feedback would be great.

Honchoforever1, nice bump.

I have used these chains like crazy and on the snow they work amazing even on ice. A kid lost his sled on the ice and I pushed it back to shore with out any problem. In mud they work like paddles almost and I have yet to break them at all and with the gap they have between the runs they still crawl on the rocks a bit.

I forgot about these, bought a whole box of jack chain too, maybe I'll get around to it this fall.

I made a set in a similar manner but for the outer "ring" I used an appropriate size split ring (think like a key chain ring) and for the inner I used a split hinged ring (like a binder has)

Outer ring:

Inner ring:

I made a set for my 2wd Slash last year but the right wheel chain always crept off the sides after 5 minutes of running. I switched to paddles or spikes when running in the snow. They probably would work best for trucks that don't have huge amounts of wheel speed.
