Question 15* endmill/custom ground milling tools

kind of a two part question i guess.

1. does a 15 degree endmill exist? if so where?

2. if not where can i get a custom one ground?

Wen i was looking for an end mill that had a 45* cutting edge but still had a small flat on the bottom for facing, i couldn't find much of anything, and custom grinding is on the expensive side. We had a neat little grinding machine (no idea what its real name is), but it was designed to hold round stock and had a belt driven motor to rotate the part while grinding. Anyways, i just set the motor to 45 with the grinding wheel and ground a end mill down to what i needed. It seemed to cut fine, but it at most had 30 minutes of run time on it.

What do you need it for?...why couldn't you mount the piece at an off camber angle or get a vice that tilted up?

for my application a small flat in the center is fine. probly even prefered.

its a radial cut so the angled material/soft jaws wouldnt work.

i had one made before and it wasnt that bad. it was a 13 degree i just cant remember where i got it...

Exclamation Re: 15* endmill/custom ground milling tools

ok i contacted that company, and they said the 15 degrees is measured from the tool centerline. so that would make one LONG very pointy endmill.
not what im needing. he said technically what would need would be a 75 degree endmill, but that most companies dont make over a 45 degree end mill.

so does anyone know of a 75 degree endmill?(or if this degree name is even correct) or a company that can custom make one?
or a better way to do it? here is what im trying to cut.
for size reference the OD of the rod is ~2.2"

You want a 75* included angle endmill. Give a good grind shop that and a tip size and they should be able to set one up pretty easily.

If you cant find anyone locally, i have a contact for a good grinder here who could have something for you pretty quickly.

I have a few things at work I mill with a similar profile. When we need to have one cut we either special order a end mill or send an old dull and chipped one out to be reground for it.

You can also look at TMCO I think they have an indexable tool that will give you a similar profile.

Is there a reason the part couldnt be made in a lathe? That does sound easier

yeah there will be a TON of CNC work done on the HAAS not shown. trying to prevent machine swap and time lost per part just for one surface. cause i have 150 of them to do.

Do you have access to a 5 axis turning center? The best of both worlds.

We have a kenemetal rep we order through. They are kenemetal end mills so I assume that's where he gets them.

I work for a big corporation so they may be shelling out massive money for them.

I believe you'd want a 15* chamfer, or a 75* endmill. I've seen plenty of adjustable inserted chamfer mills, but I cant think of any that dont require clearance on either the bottom or the edge of the chamfer. Its very possible that you'll want to have something ground, but virtually anyone with a darex endmill grinder could do it.. shouldnt be too expensive.

I would make a modified hole saw for such a narrow pocket. The cutting edge will have to be curved or very thin otherwise. Your machinist not into making tooling, or are you doing the work yourself?

i assume your not talking about an oldschool hole saw for a hand drill?
