| 1/4 steel rod soldering help
im kinda in the same predicament, i dont know what im doing rong, i have the torch above and lead free solder thats it. heres my problem. i heat the solid rod steel, 1/4 inch up till it is almost red hot, and have tried many dsifferent temps, and put the solder close and it melts it and drips off and all it does once it hits the tubing is roll off into a ball it seems to be a problem with the solder should it be Lead Free? i have tried miscelanious times on here to get an answer i just cant figure out what i am doing rong http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...001&lpage=none Last edited by traxxas_man; 07-17-2006 at 01:16 AM. |

You need to be brazing, solder will not hold when it comes to chassis building.

Red hot is too hot for soldering. If your sticking tube together I agree soft soldering isn't the best. Clean the metal very well (sandpaper) slather up with flux and heat. Apply solder intermitantly untill the solder starts to melt then a little more heat and it should flow nicely. |
