360° video rig
 

I am not sure where to post this, so I thought it is some sort of a tool, please forgive me if it is is the wrong section..

I have been getting loads of questions about my rig on how I build it, how it works and to show pics of it.
This thread will hopefully give some answers to all interested in building one or those who are just curious.
To start things of I have made a video of the rig itself, just simple footage which shows how the rig is mounted on my Wraith.

Check it out and tell me what you think or ask any questions that might pop up...

WOW thats totally cool! So, how does it preform with all that weight up so high, I had a go pro right on hood of honcho and I could tell that it was so off balance. Also, it constantly rotates with no control?

Very cool - just subscribed to your YouTube channel. Love your videos and great to see how you made the mount. How is the driving with that on top? Need to take it easy? You should put up a bloopers video!

@crowninshield3 : yup, the rig moves freely, no control whatsoever.

and as long as I stay on level ground and don't do fast cornering it is ok to drive. It does make the center of gravity go up quite a bit. But the Wraight was never build for high speed cornering anyway I guess. I think with the stock rtr motor it would be ok, but the 5700kv does give a bit to much speed to keep it on all wheels when going fast arround corners.
On rocks it is a pain so far. I will try to lower it a bit to see if that helps but the higher center of gravity makes it fall over very easy.

This is pretty cool. I've started putting one together for my on-road car, using old heli parts. I'm building mine to fairly tight tolerances (+/- a few thousandths) but it struck me that having a little room for the arm to rock might be a good idea. The way I see it, the mass of the arm would slow down or absorb sudden motions. Any thoughts?

my suggestion would be to build it as tight as possible as long as it still rotates freely. small unevenness will rock the rig more if tolrerances are bigger.. my version 2 of the standing axle has more tolerance and it make the video a bit more shaky...

Picked up some aluminum c channel and flat stock tonight. Lets see what that can do. I'm better with metal than lumber.

Made a little progress today. I used some 1/8" x 3/4" aluminum flat stock for the beam. I've cut it about 36" long for now. It will be adjusted based on bounciness and I got some C channel aluminum as a backup plan.

All of the mounting parts, bearings, collar, etc. came from a couple of helis my brother was getting rid of. So far, it looks okay. I threw a Deans connector in for scale.

First pic is the bearing plate, mounted on the bottom of the beam.

This is the teensy, lightweight camera I'll use at first. Resolution is only VGA, but I'm not much of a videographer anyhow.

looking good so far.. I had a camera like that, dunno where it went though... ;-)

Made a little progress yesterday. Mounted the mast on my CC01. The Tamiya M chassis are a little too lightweight for this taller, wider rig.

Looks like its a go on the CC01, in any case.

I'm thinking about building a slower, heavier M03 as a camera gurney car, with a separate receiver controlling camera rotation.
