Default Where to buy M3 tap?

I looked on McMaster-Carr and I'm not sure if I found the right one but either way it was $85 so that's a little more than I wanted to spend for one tap (probably the wrong one). Anybody got an idea where I can get a reasonably priced/cheap tap for M3 screws? (I'll only need it for about 6 holes and then maybe never use it again).

thanks!

Not sure if you have a Fastenal out your way, but that would be a good place to start. I think I only paid like $5 for mine. They also sell the drill bit to go along with it.

If you have an Orchard Supply Hardware in your area they usually have a good selection of individual taps so you dont have to buy a whole set that you wont use.

Its not 3.5mm its 3mm .5mm thread pitch but yes 5mm pitch is the pitch we commonly use. Also, if the tap does not come with a drill you will need a 2.5mm drill (aluminum and plastic) and slightly larger if you are going to tap steel.

Be careful with the cheap sets. The small taps break (or bend ) easily, and the dies are damn near worthless unless you are chasing preexisting threads.

I gave up pretty quickly on the HF set I bought years ago.

I got a m3 tap and drill set from the LHS a few years back. Seems like it was Dubro brand.

Yeah, be careful what you get at HF. Some stuff is OK, some isn't worth the scrap value.

I got my 2 taps from my Local Nut and Bolt store. $6.49 each

They are a wholesaler so their stuff is stupid cheap. When you're buying taps, Be looking for a M3 x 0.5. Its a perfect fit. Yeah, NEVER buy anything that precise from Harbor Freight, you'll regret it once you break a tap off in the hole...

I keep buying them individually from the LHS. They sell they Dubro taps in individual sizes with the correct bit for the tap size you need. I have found that most tap sets don't cover the sizes I need for my RC stuff, so I wait till I can find the ONE I need when I need it. Can't justify buying a $40 tap set to get two useable sizes (M3+M4), when I can get those two sizes with the bit for $12. I do have a nice tap set in the garage for cars, but once again, they're almost all too big for anything I need for RC. That's why I just buy the few I need for RC by themselves.

If y'all can't find any in your area, I'll be more than happy to pick up some from my local bolt and nut store. Tell me the quantity, if you need a handle or not, and if you need a die too.
