Any type of heat-safe mat, weld mat or spark mat will work. Here's good results

I use fire bricks. I bought mine locally for $3.99 a piece but here's an amazon link....

I use a large piece of steel on top of bricks. I like the steel because I use magnets to hold pieces in place.

i use a 3/8" thick alum plate so if any silver solder gets away it won't bond my work to the steel plate like i have seen done ....

I use a 1/4" thick 6"x12" chunk of steel plate. Solid and straight, though I keep whichever joint I'm working on hanging off of the edge so that the plate doesn't suck the heat away, and so that it doesn't accidentally become brazed to the plate.

how straight and true is it? now does it hold up to the mapp gas?
does it draw some of the torches heat like steel/alum?

i tried a scrap piece of granite one time. bad idea. extremely dangerous. it litterally slowly exploded. the heat of the torch make the tiny peices of rock etc glowing red and shoot off in all directions. little molten missiles

Yep that's how they create a "flamed" edge on the granite. Basically the quartz crystals in the stone expand when exposed to the heat and pop out of the surface.

There r dozens of different patterns/colors to choose from... I found one that's straight and flat( no texture) It seems to hold up to the heat just fine. As for mapp gas I use a full size brazing tourch on oxy propane and the tile holds up fine. It dosnt seem to suck up the heat like steel dose but I try not to direct the heat directly to the tile

I bought a 12x12 tile from Menards and was able to get 3-4 joints done before is shatter-exploded. Thank goodness for safety glasses. I ended up getting some firebricks from Tractor Supply. I've had good luck with them so far. I would love to get something different, they seem to suck a ton of heat away from the workpieces.

Crazy. Ill have to be extra careful... Do u guys put the flame straight on the Tile? I always keep it away from everything but the joint I'm joining. Havnt had any thing crack or shater yet. Knock on wood
