Default drill press

well i need a drill press because i keep cutting my fingers up, drilling in my hand and we know where that goes..

tired of having to wrap my bloody hand..

last night i went to make my own axial lift kit (to revers and make lower for my shocks read it in foff)...

but used grinder to get it close. then went to drill through metal ...overhang metal over corner of bench... then while slowly drilling.. metal slid out of hand and sliced my middle finger wide open..

now im on a budget as this is why i have not had one yet...

so what do you think about this one..

Black Bull™ Drill Press with Laser Centering Guide, 5 Speed - 3904790 | Tractor Supply Company

then thought I could just replace the tube or extend it to make it a floor standing unit and not a desk mounted unit.

dude, you need a vice or at least vice grips!

EDIT: I'd love to have a drill press.

Just a tip, I built my workbench with a two inch overhang and the top is all 2x12s. That way I can take a c clamp and hold down whatever I'm working on and just drill into the bench. Not perfect, but its fairly safe, haha

Is there any real reason why you need a floor standing unit? Unless you are working with something huge you should be able to fit most of the stuff you are working on on a bench model.

well my father made a stand for my bench grinder and I love it... vs $135 at sears...... it was free...

then i tought id get a bench drill press and bolt it to the desk...

see my wife and I have an agreement.. we bought $1200 worth of craftsman cabinets and bench... I dont want to drill that bench...
plus it is not that deep (oh sheese the last 2 lines are just wrong.. wrong ... wrong)..

anywho... my neighbor threw out a island counter top.. so i grabbed it.. 6.5' x 3.5' and I set it up in the garage.. my wife told me I am not keeping it... so i figured a floor unit drill press.....

my idea is the huge counter top... drill on far left... vise on far right... soldering station middle back...
put a back on it and hang stuff up on it.. make a hobby work table...

i see they sell a vise for the drill press too.. so may not need a full vise.. but to have both would be nice..

HF is good sometimes.. not sure about buying a drill press or anything... if i buy tools from them I dont expect to get much use b4 they break.. they are cheap in price.. but cheap in quality too....

from my experience...

I think for RC hobby parts, a floor unit would be a bit overkill, and for large projects that require a floor unit, that head assembly would be kind of small.

I'd keep it as a hobby size mill, but make a stand like the one pictured below. It will raise it to a comfortable height, and give some more storage below the drill press. And who couldn't use a bit more storage space?

I have been using about the same drill as you are looking at and I leave it on the bench not bolted down, if I need to bolt it down a simple c-clamp works fine. Buy the vise as it makes it a lot better than pain and band aids and will help with the little stuff

I've got a Skil benchtop from Lowes. Not a bad unit, $120 IIRC, another $30 for the really chitty vice that is better than nothing, but just barely. I've never bolted it down either, haven't found the need to.

I have the HF 12 speed drill press bench top one and minus it taking a second to come up to speed and the cover being a little rattley (ill foam tape some foam in to cut the noise) its a great drill press running my TapMatic head on it. I have only done up to 8-32 with it in aluminum but it works great in my opinion for hobby stuff. The price wasn't bad either with a 20% coupon

I use a craftsman $100 bench mount jobbie....works fine for everything I need it for. Mounted on an old Formica countertop, though not bolted down - makes cleanup a ton easier - just move it so i can vacuum around it. Those little chips get everywhere! One of the best tools I've bought for the hobby, next to my Dremel.

Very cool! I have a 1940's era Craftsman 109 lathe. It runs but needed some TLC. Thankfully there is a lot of info on these little guys, so I hope to have it working in tip-top shape one day:

I didn't read the entire post, fact is drill press is always nice. But sometimes you can't use one and you mentioned not wanting to drill into your benches.

What I've always done is taken a piece of wood about 12" sq. 3/4" thick and some steel plate 1/8" thick and joined them and use it metal side down to drill into. I even use a small one on the drill press. Also i find a small drill press vies for $15 is nice to hold onto these small things we are working on.
