Default Resonable $$ Band saw

Looking to get a 9" band saw not sure on the quality of the ones at the local hardware stores ( Lowes, Home Depot, or even Harbor Freight ) this one kind of stuck out with a 2 speed motor for cutting " metal-based materials ". All I will be using it for is plastic, very light gauge steel, and thin aluminum. With out going all out and getting a Jet band saw - way out of budget I think this one would fit my needs. Wanting to know if you guys had some other options.

SKIL 9" Band Saw with Light 3386

Thanks J.

I have a similar model, same brand.

It doesn't do well with steel. I haven't found a proper blade that will cut anything but the thinnest of sheets.

But for plastic and aluminum, it does fine.

I bought a craftsman 10" bandsaw, and a metal cutting blade from mcmastercarr, and I have been able to cut plastic, aluminum, and light steel with no problem. I try to avoid cutting the steel because I don't want to wear out the blade, but it does cut it. The saw I bouthg is :

For hobbies nothing beats the proxxon , able to use coolant to keep things cool and dust free when cutting carbon or fg.
Get custom blades from probandsawworks.com, either a high count vari tooth like 14/18 or 24 t , always bimetal nothing less

Do the consumer reports research everybody has a different opinion like ford vs Chevy when we all know Dodge rules lol!!! I would keep an eye on Craigslist in your area, in these times of economic hardship one mans treasure (and loss) is your gain, I just picked up a $150 scroll saw that was new in the box for $35 off of CL just bring a sample of your material that you are going to generally cut and plug it in and test it, another thing to watch is estate sales, kids and grand kids don't want granddads prize tools and again their loss is your gain!! Best of luck

Buy the way, all you really need is a good blade and a some spray lubricant! That's the ticket.
