Default Looking at getting a new soldering iron and I'm overwhelmed

I've been reading up on soldering irons and I've narrowed my search down to two. The first is the Weller P2KC butane portable soldering iron, the second is the Trakpower TK-950. My current setup is a craftsman soldering gun. I like the portability of the Weller but I'm not sure how well it will work soldering wires that have shrink tubing. The Trakpower looks like the winner, but the cord seems like it would be a pain in the ass. What kind of Iron do you have, and if you were to get another iron what would you get? Thanks!

After buying a portable Weller and being totally frustrated and hating soldering, I finally took everyone's advice and bought the Hakko... I love soldering now!

Just remember a good soldering iron is like a good radio or charger. It's going to last you a long, long time and will pay for itself quickly. I've tried all different types of portable soldering irons when I used to work for an utility body company for trucks and ended up going back to my weller wes51 plug in. It has more control and never have to worry about running out of battery power or butane fuel while in the middle of working on something.

Hakko 888. Hands down. Solid iron, heats FAST and stats within a few degrees of where you set it. Also, easy to find tips for it.

I have a Hakko 936 that's probably going on 15 years old. If it died tomorrow I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

love my trakpower tk-950, glad i bought it.

i have a radio shack butane portable that has always worked when needed. i learned you have to allow it to get to temperature in the cab of your truck before using it outside though.

I have an old 60 Watt Weller Soldering station that works great. Weller 60w soldering station - The Garage Journal Board
The 24V transformer is in the base making it heavy and stable. Has one of those coils to hold the iron when not in use, and has a spot for a sponge to tin and clean the tip off. Find something that will hold your iron without tipping over easily.

Sometimes you don't have to have expensive equipment to get the job done. I have used this iron since I started the hobby back in 2011. It heats up quickly, it does its job and you can wrap it and stick it in a drawer until you need it again.

I have never had a problem with cold connections or melting connectors or anything. Practice makes perfect... everytime.

I've had that one for about 25 years. It finally died on me last week. I'm probably going to replace it with the tk950 or the 888.

Have you owned a decent adjustable heat iron? I can't see paying more for that one than the iron I recommended.

I have this plug in Weller I like quite a bit, heats and cools super quick. Would definitely recommend this for general use.
Catalog No. WPS18MP Product Detail

Also have a WESD51 station but haven't used it yet. Got it on Ebay at good price, adjustable, seems it would do any soldering I'd ever need to do.
