Your best bet is to use a Bender. You can also get the bend started by bending it around something like a softball bat. Then bend it by hand. Thats what I do if I need one with a bigger radius bend. Manily I just use a vise for all of it.

im using a vise but the edges on the vise ar like squared off and the crimp the bend even with the slightest force. iv learned to work with it bend it a little at a time but its a little rough but not all that bad

OK, either get a brakeline tuber bender (best) or try clamping a piece of steel tube (~1" diameter) in your vice and bend the tube around that. Jay |

just figureded this one out the other day. after making your measurements for the location of the bend, bust out the dremel or hack saw and cut HALF-way thru the tube . on 3/16" tube i can get 90' of bend by slicing the tube 4 times about 1/16' apart and start bending till the cuts touch. if it still isn't enough, cut out somemore. then when you have the desired angle, braze or weld in place, then fill the cut section with braze or weld . seems to be working well for those tight radius's and will also let you adjust your angles to help square every thing up! hope this helps... i never use a bender, waste of money if you ask me. just get you a peice of plywood or mdf at least 3/4" thick, 2 or 3 decent sized nuts & bolts, put it together and youv'e got a jig. then you can bend 2 at a time so things match up, works great! |

Just use 3/16 solid rod and a Vise to do all your bends. That can make about anything with out problems and easy.

I'm using 3/16 brakeline tubing and a brakeline bender. I'm using a Jeep Rubicon body for size reference (standard style tuber using hood, fenders and doors) I'm not able to make the bends tight enough around the headlights. I've got no vice, so its a little tougher to secure things down. Any ideas? |

I used my brake line bender a bunch when I first started now I rarely use it at all. I found I can do more with my hands than with the bender. It is good to start off with as it gives you and idea of what the brake line will do.

A softball bat works well for bends. You can use the handle for those tighter bends and the sweet spot for those longer bends. I know it sounds stupid but works extremly well.

I used my finger and my forarm, those worked really well for most bends. for things that needed a little tighter bend I used my manhood. Now I have a tube bender and I'm hoping to get off my lazy *** and use it. |

alright COLE82, a bender is faster and easier, and possibly more accurate. but benders won't let you do anything this tight. when i saw LOONEYBIN was buliding a cab i figured he meant really tight turns like these: to keep things square i try to start with a ladder frame, and put it together on the concrete floor. you still may end up cutting some or most of it off later to accomidate your design, but then you can use those for triangulation pieces. then just make each piece two at a time with the jig i suggested above so there exactly the same & this should help you keep things square...hope this helps! 6 & 1/2 dozen ways to get to the same point though! |

Basically I want to do what you did to the Jeep on the left, except I want to connect a bar from the stinger tube to just inside of the headlight tube (where the bar is straight). How exactly do you bend the tube with another over it? Do you just use the larger dia tube for leverage? I might just build the rest of the buggy and have someone bend me a headlight setup. By the way, your two rigs kickass, nice job man.
