Default metal?

ok i have a question what is a good thickness of steel plate that is silver solderable and where can i find it? i had some random metal plat that is steel but the solder just wouldn't stick i think i got it too hot right off the bat but it is impossible to heat up without instantly over heating. i think its just too thin. what do people use when they braze in the flat pieces in some shock hoops?
