NOTE I TAKE NO RESPONSIBLILTY FOR WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR VANQUISH RIMS DO THIS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK. So I started with these I wanted a colour change for my re-painted Range Rover something more subtle. Disassembled Washed with Hot Soapy Water make sure you remove any dirt this is a crucial step. Dried Your Going to need a Torch and somewhere to heat the rims up. Heat Slowly THIS IS ALSO IMPORTANT DO NOT RUSH WITH THE HEAT TAKE YOUR TIME. DO NOT USE THE HOT PART OF THE FLAME! Colour gradually changing That'll work there nearly all the same colour. NOTE THE BRIGHT ONE THIS WAS HEATED TOO QUICKLY Back Rings Done as well remember HEAT SLOWLY. Allow to cool DO NOT QUENCH IN COLD WATER allow to cool naturally Reassembled and the Method Logo still remains Much Better Last edited by Dready; 04-26-2014 at 01:59 PM. |

I wonder what others will come up with, or do you think this happen being they were red. Knowing the outcome. That is one sweet looking ride now. Gold! Edit: it was before you went gold |

Looks good, the only downside to heating anodizing is the affective loss of the the bond between the dyes and the metal itself. It usually becomes very prone to flaking or has the orange peel look to it. Not all types will flake but it can happen. The color change is because in most bright color anodizing the dye pigments are usually an organic mix of material and the look comes from them literally just heating up and burning off. Hence the reason when heated super fast its a diff color due to it burning off more molecules in the dye. As for the logo staying its because its a laser etching which is done at a much higher temp than the torch can get so it would not be affected by the heat. I manufacture a few parts that are heat treated after being laser etched and I've only had a few that were ever affected by the process... Anyway looks really good especially on that rig.. --Dan |

I would absolutely stay away from a torch, clean the hell out of them, then put them in the oven, 500 degrees. They will heat up much slower, and without the uneven direct heat a torch will provide. I bakes many a paintball gun when I had one a color I did not like. You can also boil the parts, and it will release a lot of the dye. They come out with more of an acid washed look. Black turns copper, grey turns to a silver. At lest on my paintball guns.

Nice. I always thought those would look good in a bronze/gold color...

I agree with the baking portion mush more than a torch. I've baked many sets of parts as well from being unhappy with the finish. The only things that's no good is of you go to re anodize them expect a much more dull finish and even more so of a splotchy type effect. Color will always vary depending on the type/brand of anodizing used but most stay within the same base as the origional color. Just think R-O-Y-G-B-I-V for the bases and you can kind of guage what the outcome wil be depending on the color mixes. The brighter the color starts off the more likely it will maintain a decent type finish. If its a flat color then expect more of a powdery type look and if its a dark color good luck. --Dan | |

For a very short heat cycle you can keep it in blue, but the same long term result would be the goldish look above.. A bit of dramatization for you guys just to see what can happen Here's a few rc4wd blue anodized stand offs I chose real small parts for the quickness to show this. Beginning blue Quick heat cycle roughly 45sec - 1min Longer heat cycle 1 min 30 seconds with a 2 min heat And why not 2:30 My point being there is a very fine line between baking the anodizing and ruining it, to destroying a part. Now a very high quality metal and anodizing can give a completely different result but just watch what your doing I'd hate to see anyone ruin a $150+ set or wheels or a chassis etc. Now does anyone have a few standoffs I can use to mount my shocks,......lol --Dan Last edited by sickcivic95; 04-28-2014 at 09:45 PM. |

Thanks for the info. I've got way too much Tamiya blue. I really prefer bronze/gold tones, like Tamiya used to use.
