Default cutting board material ?

im thinking of making my own chassis and was wondering whats the best material of choice.i have some nylon about 1/4 thick and i see alot of people are using cutting board plastic. i can get some aluminum but all i have is a dremel and though its not out of the realm of possibilities it wouldnt be easy to cut all that.lots of bits and time.

i was also thinking of "Frankensteinen" some chassis together but i dont want it to look hack.i was inspired for that idea from will on rcmt. he used a jugg chassis and jefferson chassis. both of which i have.

so i dont know, wanted to get some opinions from you guys.

The stuff is pretty light weigth and easy to work with. I made this skid plate out of a $1 cutting board from the Dollar Tree Store. Took me all of 30min to make it and get the tranny mounted.

its called UHMW....ultra high molecular who gives a crap! it's slippery as hell, and machines well.i bought an assorted mixed bag for like 12 bucks.it came with about 10 different sized pieces white and black.i got it from a place call woodcraft.i'm not sure if its only here or if its a national chain. if you driil out the corners and dremel out the rest its not that bad, i made a stretched and shortened TLT chassis completly out of this stuff, except for braces.works goood.

Yea, I started using cutting boards a couple years back. It is extremely easy to work with and is very durable.

Here was my first ever attempt and building a crawler. It was fugly

Then I built this little Quick Drive Jeep Chassis

I just picked up two cutting boards from the dollar store to use for skid plate material.

May make a chassis out of it, don't know yet.

So what thickness is recommended for plastic/UHMW/polyethylene,cutting board sheets?

I suppose it depends on the size/scale of the truck:
Wheely king, say 1/10th scale. 1/4" thick?
How about a converted Mini Crusher, say 1/18th scale? 1/8" thick?

Would Polystyrene be strong/stiff enough? Too flexible?

polystyrene is styrofoam, if I remember from the plastics class I took in college. I don't think it would work very well for a crawler. Maybe a boat.

Every plastic comes in a variety of forms and densities. Polystyrene styrofoam plates are low density. The stuff used for making hard R/C bodies is high density, but still polystyrene. In fact, Polystyrene can go all the way to being called UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight), which is quite substantial.

I did a report on polyethylene in a Mechanical Engineering course. Both lawn chair webbing and hip waders are made of it, yet have extremely different look, feel, strength, flexiblity.

And to think I learned all this in the town in which you live? LOL! (UND, class of 1997, the flood year! Class taught by George Bible)

To make a ridiculously long story short, being I was asking on an R/C forums, I was refering to the type commonly used in R/C. Now if I was asking on a disposable plates forum....

My lack of research or handling of "R/C grade polystyrene" is the grounds for my question.
