| Aluminum 6061-T6 vs. Bending
I have been starting to do my own tube work and thus far have used 1/4" AL round rod sourced from Home Depot. Most of my bends are very tight radius (0.25") and I have had no trouble working with the Home Depot material without it ripping. There is no specification on the material that I have been buying other than diameter. I'd like to source some 3/16 from onlinemetals.com but all they carry is 6061-T6511 which being heat treated, I'm afraid it will rip/crack trying to bend it. Order Aluminum 6061 Round in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com An email to onlinemetals.com didn't really clarify that it would work. The CSR mentioned it was stretched to relieve stress without going so far as saying it would work. Anyone use 6061-T6511 for this type of work? |

Nice work! What are you using for a bender?

Thanks. I've had fun doing different tube projects. I use this one from Amazon...... http://www.amazon.com/Shop-Tuff-MR-0.../dp/B0000AXFCD |

6061-T6 is going to possibly crack while cold bending. Especially in a 90 degree bend. You could anneal it all and remove the heat treating and it will bend better and without cracking like 2024 and 7075. McMaster-Carr |

So I went a head and ordered some, accidentally actually since the McMaster site immediately placed the order instead of a confirmation screen with a shipping quote. The quote was sent in an invoice the next day. Good thing it was reasonable. Anyway. I had no issues with bending the 6061 in any radius. Was easy to work with.
