Default craftsman lathe 109

Just bought this lathe I don't really know anything about it I got sight unseen except for the two pics.
I had my friend pick it up for me he said it's not too bad.

Congrats on the lathe. You'll wonder how you ever got by without it. Looks kinda small from the pics.

From what I can tell it's about 24 to 28 inches long.not as big as I wanted but I think it will be fine.

From the pics, it looks like the 109.20630. I have the 109.21270.

I thought I had a thread here somewhere about mine, but I don't see it. I must have just mentioned it somewhere.

I'm not positive but I think it's a 6X12. I'd have to look though.

Parts are still available through Clausing, I rebuilt the gearhead of a similar lathe last summer. Nice little machines, they put any new bench lathe to shame.

I used an iGaging dro for the Z, and modified a cheap set of 6" digital calipers for the X. Easy, cheap, and plenty good for what we do.

We didn't have the luxury of DRO's when I went to machining school.
We were taught to "read the dials," and used a dial indicator on the carriage.

DRO's would make it super easy to switch between SAE and METRIC.

This is my eventual project for the lathe I have. Mine is in pretty good shape, but I'd like to do a complete overhaul on it.

Craftsman 109 Lathe Rebuild

I get a lot of chatter and I believe it's coming from the sloppy gibs and carriage.

I read dials for a week or two just to say I did, but still hooked up the dros as quick as I could.

SAE to metric is just a push of a button.

Like any older lathe you got to be careful but it should treat you well if you treat it properly. If your good with machinery I recommend tearing it down and then re-building it so you can clean things off and double check nothing is totally screwed up.

That said for a simple z-dro (long axis) this is what we do at the school I am at. Note were using dirt cheap calipers and it isn't ideal but... it works There is a large magnet underneath the caliper "body" and 2-4 neodynium magnets attached to the carriage.

nothing wrong with 'reading the dials', you learn where your machine is sloppy by doing it this way. A few simple conversion factors on a cheap TI-34 calculator will give you good results every time.

No dials on these old 109's, at least not on mine. A buddy gave me a set of these when I first got my 109...still haven't made time to get them on.

The one we have at our 'Maker Space' has the dial rings, I couldn't imagined that some of the machines wouldn't have dials. I learned something new today

Ive found the cheap calipers can be surprisingly accurate and precise to the 0.001".

109s are nice machines for the size, much stiffer than a typical import. A great home shop score!
