Default small tap set

hey guys, i'm looking for a tap set to work with the small 2.5mm screws we use.
Also what size do I need to look for?

I have a normal tap and die set, but its to big.

thank you

I'm not quite needing it yet, but I've looked at them on ebay under "Mini Tap and Die Wrench Set M2.5 Set".

You'll also need to look under "2mm drill set" for the bit needed for that hole.

If you get set that works for you, let me know.

I bought these sets a few years ago. They saved me last year at ECSC. The grub screw ripped out of my winch. I re-drilled for 4mm and threaded it. I was back on course in less than a 1/2 hour. Not cheap but has all the sizes you'll need. You can get them at Tower.

Hey bigwig, one nice thing about living in the Great White North is, we are supposed to be a "metric" country so metric stuff should be easy to find, eh? I don't buy my taps and drills in sets, I pick up the specific sizes I need as most sets I've seen have too many sizes I don't use. I've found 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, and 4mm at the local industrial supply house. Many of these places will sell to the general public and prices are pretty reasonable. Some of the larger auto supply stores also carry these smaller metric sizes. And don't forget your local hobby store as some will carry these sizes as well. Only thing is, I've found their prices can be double what the industrial supply house prices are. I've even found metric taps and drills in hardware stores in Washington State, just south of where I am.
One more thing, I usually like to have at least two (2) of each size on hand as these small size taps tend to break at the most inopportune time (Friday evening when rushing to finish up a project for the next day crawling/trailing outing).

Great Planes makes one just like the Dubro pic'd above, part# GPMR8118 for the metric.

I would just buy the single sets through dubro. You only need a few of the popular sizes.

I have the same set. I think I bought mine from Tower also. Been using it for years. Works great.

If you will be tapping anything thicker than 1/8", be sure to go easy and oil up. Nothing worse than snapping a bit off on your last hole, while being over zealous to finish. Be sure to purchase a good quality "T" wrench that fits your bit properly.

Spend a little more for quality, about $4 to $7 Canadian EACH for something that won't leave you frustrated with the results.

McMaster-Carr is a good place to look for stuff like taps. Do you have an industrial supply house like McMaster in Canada?

If you aren't, I would do some some reading up on various tap types. I went years using the lamo du-bro 3mm taps for rc work. Little did I know I was using the wrong type and kept breaking taps. Get some good quality "Through Hole" or "Blind Hole" (If needed) taps.

I'm not trying to thread-crap, but you need to be careful with McMaster-Carr too. I'm sure their stuff is higher quality than the majority of the junk on Amazon & Ebay, but their stuff isn't always what it says it is either. The business I work for doesn't buy any fasteners from them because we've had problems in the past with their products not matching the Certificate of Conformance that they supplied, and having excessive failures during testing.

On to taps. I bought a cheap metric tap set at Banggood. I bought it specifically for the M3 tap, but so far it's doing ok. Since I'm mostly just tapping plastic and maybe some aluminum, the cheap set was all I needed.
