| Perfect pinion and spur mesh
Way back when I was a kid racing my Associated gold tub RC10, I picked up a number of tips and tricks from the older seasoned dudes. I always seemed to run my pinion too tight against the spur causing binding or too loose causing sloppy engagement. One of the older guys showed me a neat, easy trick. He took a piece of paper, just standard notebook stuff, and cut a thin piece about as wide as the teeth of the pinion, and about 4-5 inches long. He slipped it between my spur and pinion and told me to push the pinion in to the spur and snug up my motor. Walla! Perfect mesh and engagement! The paper provides the ideal gap between the two with no guess work. I still use it to this day! |

I still use this trick. Learned about it in an RC magazine in the 80's or early 90s Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk |

Nowadays you can find it in some user manuals. I never used it though. |

I always used a dollar bill. Little thicker than note book papaer but usually easier to find. Go figure I am married to a reading teacher and can never find a pen or paper |

I haven’t used paper for setting gears. There is always a spot on the spur where the gear clearance between it and the pinion is closest. That is the spot where I adjust the gears for proper mesh. It is a touch thing. I can feel the teeth hitting each other when I wiggle the spur gear against the pinion. To sum it up, find the spot where the gears are closest and adjust the gears at that spot. |
