Default Dealing with loose bearing races?

What do you do when a bearing is a very loose fit into the race? PTFE tape? or is there a better way?

I've used Teflon tape before with marginal results, it just seems to get pushed out of the way or to one side when you have it tight or you leave it loose it just doesn't fill the extra space fully.

You could also use loctite if its going into a metal pocket. I've never tried the loctite method since the bearings we're working with are so small and I worry about getting the loctite in the bearing itself which would likely ruin it. You'd also want to make sure if you glue them in that you have access to be able to extract them later on.

I use bearing/sleeve retaining compound, such as Permatex 64000, available in small tubes at most auto parts stores. Like Humboldt said, you have to be careful not to get it in the bearing, which can be difficult if it's in a blind hole. I just give the bearing a spin every few minutes while it cures, if I think I might have got some in there. That stuff works good too, I usually end up destroying the tiny rc bearings when I need to remove them.

I'm partial to a dab of silicon sealant. It's usually way to thick to get into a sealed or shield bearing, and the holding power is just about right to get it back out later without breaking anything.

Disappointing when quality and bearings fitment is not great. Dab of silicon sealant good idea, I’ve used a tiny bit of E6000 same way, cures faster and easier to remove later. Also used a piece of plastic bag between bearings and pockets.

The bearing/sleeve retaining compound is the way to go. This is specifically what the product is designed for. In order to get it in a tiny space, I use a small syringe/needle and I can inject it in an increadbly tight area then throw the syrinvge away when done.

CA glue. Had this issue when I was racing 1/8 scale. Worked like a charm. To get the bearing out, I just heated it up.

I had to replace a seized bearing in the trans of my Sporster, but luckily I caught before it effed up the race.

Thanks guys, I'll give the silicone sealant and sleeve retainer both a try.

Yes but in the tiny bearings and often blind holes of rc, it can be difficult to replace bearings later. Heating up the parts should free them up for removing, that’s what I do for 1:1 automobile use.

As crude as this sounds it does work well & easily,
have before laid a piece of plastic film over the pocket, pushed the bearing in, popped through the shaft hole in the middle & trimmed off the excess with a sharp blade.
Sometimes its as thin as shopping bag, but have had to use parts bag before to get desired thickness.
No risk to bearing from "gluing up", easy to push out again later if bearing dies.

Yes, that’s the plastic bag bearings mod.

I swear by the pastic bag fix. Sometimes takes a few tries to find the proper thickness bag to end up with the proper fitment. It bugs me if a bearing just falls into/out of its bore.

I put CA glue on a Q-tip, rub it around the bearing race, let dry, check for bearing fit, apply again if needed until I get a nice snug fit. Doing it this way you are not "gluing" the bearing inside the race, but rather effectively decreasing the ID of the bearing race.
