if you dont have a sponge, a damp paper towel will work well too, and if youre really dsperate you can use any soft cloth dry to wipe hard crusties, then re-tin the tip. A clean Iron makes soldering so much easier

Also the tips have a coating that can be burned off as I have found out.... I've left my iron on before, and killed the tip. With the coating burned off, it was awful trying to solder. Toss on a fresh tip, and it was good as new

I use a wet sponge.

A damp sponge when the iron is hot is all that you really need. Good...soldering stations come with a little spot to hold your miniature sponge.
YES, clean my tip by melting it into a little brick of Sal Ammoniac (available at hardware stores) always keep some solder on the tip so it doesn't overheat and burn up the tip as soon. If you're not going to be using it for awhile, unplug/turn it off...the tip will last ALOT longer. I use some good non-corrosive flux on batteries and some stuff otherwise the high grade fine electronic flux cored solder is all you need. Never file or sand the tip unless it's the only tip you have left and it's way messed up and you're going to buy a new tip...this can remove the outer metal coating of the tip. A small wire brush is ok, but really a damp sponge should be enough unless it's been seriously neglected.

As with most of the chemicals used in soldering, don't breath the vapors of the Sal Ammoniac, flux, solder etc....but you already knew that...lol.

I reallly like my Ungar 50 watt pencil iron for most applications in RC. Most of the cheapo Radio Shack, etc. irons will work, but not nearly as well...especially if you ever do any soldering on pcbs, like inside your esc or rx.

EDIT: Bought my Ungar at the lhs years ago.

these are all good tips. i just came back from school that taught soldering. don't forget to throw some solder on there to preserve the tip before putting it up

Just go to the craft section of wal-mart and get a sponge. Just let it heat up and wipe it off on a wet sponge.
