New Garage/Shop Build

Bought a new house a few weeks ago and one of the first things on the list was to build out the garage. Biggest things on the list were more/better lighting, a dedicated bench for the CNC router and computer, and more bench space for the lathe and drill press.

This is what I started with. 2 car garage, 20'-0" wide by 23'0" deep, with a 9'-6" ceiling. No insulation or drywall, and minimal power.

Stopped at Home Depot on my way home from the closing to buy 20 sheets of drywall and fiberglass insulation. Got to work right away.

Got two rows up on the walls and moved to the ceiling. Even with lightweight drywall, a drywall jack is a must.

After the ceiling was done I finished the short sections of the walls. Even the white drywall makes a huge difference in how bright it is.

Here is what I will be using for lighting. 12 of these 4' long, 4000 lumen LED fixtures. Mounting them in a 3x4 grid pattern on two switches so I can only turn 6 on if I don't need operating room lighting.

This is where I was at two nights ago. Drywall is done and the walls have been mudded. I started painting last night so I can move everything to the other half of the garage to finish the last half of the ceiling.

Update time. In the push to get the router back up and running I primered and and painted the two walls so I could set the router up in the back corner.

After I got that corner set up, I needed to start building benches to get stuff out of the middle of the garage so I could finish the ceiling. 8' x 2' x 32" bench for the lathe and drill press. It will get a shelf after I get drywall and paint done.

Looking out the man door into the garage. Need to add a little more mud on the ceiling then I can sand and finish painting.




This will be the router/computer bench in the corner. There is room for the vacuum and dust collector underneath out of the way and I will pip the vacuum exhaust up and out of the garage to help keep noise and fumes/dust down in the garage.

Any plans to epoxy coat the floor? That's probably the biggest thing I wish I had done before moving all my crap in... 12 years ago! It'd be so much harder now with the amount of stuff (some of it built-in) that's in the garage now that I can't even consider it.

Not at the moment. As much welding and grinding as I do, I'm afraid it will just get chewed up. Plus I'm just about over my budget and I haven't started electrical yet.

Router table is in. Every time I set the router up, I go lower and lower. It makes loading material and bolting it down way easier. There's also room on the end for my desktop so I don't have to go inside to modify CAM programs any more.
