Default Brazing Chromoly ?

I'm starting my custom Angled solid axles and would like to use Chromoly tubing.

Anybody know if it's possible to braze chromoly?
like using the Harris safety silv rod

If I had a TIG welder this would be a no brainer
but I only have a 125 MIG welder which I may use

Any ideas?

Thank you
RJ

Brazing chromo seams stupid unless there was a good reason to do so...

I would say the mig welding would be FAR stronger, but then I overbuild...

For a RC brazing will be fine or soldering, chromoly is steel just a different blend.

i'd say mig it, its so much quicker, you can get a lot more done quickly than you can with brazing

i have used both the .035 and .023 solid mig wire with stainless, you can get much smaller beads with the .023, as for gas i use the argon/co2 mix. straigth co2 seems to make much more spatter. i'm also using a 240v system. hope this helps

alot of 4130 chromoly production and custom bike frames are all bronze or brass brazed. chromoly is not heat treated so it can take the high heat neccessary to melt the brass/bronze. use silver though it is stronger..

the one thing i dont like about stainless is that it is a PITA to drill, unless your using high quality bits.

defenitely hard to drill.. not something I would wanna have to do.. You will need a carbide tip drill bit with high torque drill press and cutting oil being apllied somewhat liberally to keep temps down.
