I had found one place that wanted $100 sqft, for delrin. Are most people using the cutting board type material and just calling it delrin. My local hardware store has some great plastics (cutting board type material for $3 a pound in all sorts of thicknesses.

whats the difference in black and white derlin? on mc master their is around a 80 dollar difference

Ace 03-17-2007 07:01 PM

The color. No kidding.

Also search for Acetal. Delrin is just Dupont trade name for acetal. Delrin usually carries a premium price over Acetal

Most cutting boards are UHMW. UHMW is slippery and very abrasion resistant.

UHMW can be a bitch to machine. It burrs up something terrible. Not a big deal but delrin machines extremely nice. Also holds better tolerance.

Also try www.use-enco.com for acetal. Usually (not always) cheaper than mcmaster.

In colorado there's a great place to get plastic. It Colorado Plastics in Boulder. Sell by the pound.

You can try www.mscdirect.com they sell the acetal in black and white. Cutting boards arent UHMW plastic it isnt NSF rated. That material is a polypropolene mix. UHMW works good for some things but lacks torsional strength. For wear though you cant beat it. If you made links out of it they would slide like mad but wouldnt hold up to the flexing. I used alot of it for conveyor belt sliders at the machine shop for a textile companys stuff. You can also get acetal with different materials added to change its charastics. That can vary the price greatly. Not everybody carrys the "blended" stuff though, just check before ordering that its not blended. I get mine from Enco most of the time unless I'm in a big hurry then its MSC, order before 1pm usually always there the next day.
