Default Noobie question about die's

Sorry for the noob question I have looked on the net for the last 2 hours and could not find this info.

I have 1/8" rod, and want to know what side die I need to use to thread it.

Im sure the answer is simple and I sound like a ediot but I want to start building tonight.

Thanks
TQ

1/8" die will work. its not like taps you have to make the hole smaller.

Thanks but the smallest the hardware store had was 1/4" smaller was 4-40, 6-32, 8-32, 10-24, and 12-24.

Thanks for the quick response, sooner or later I will get the hang of this stuff.

3mm hardware is just a nats hair under 1/8". 4-40 is VERY close in size to 3mm hardware (just a different thread count & pitch). I think 6-32 is going to already be too large to thread 1/8" rod.

just remember to make sure you start the die square, use lots of oil, and make sure that when you are threading to make sure that you back the die off periodically so that it cuts off the shavings, and doesn't bind.

I would think for the price of the die you could get some allthread and save yourself a lot of heart ache.

I have not seen 3mm allthread before. And yes allthread would be not as much heart ache, but half the fun is in the build for me, and a smooth rod (no giggles please) look's better.
