Default Chromoly Tubing....

Looking for a good place to pick up some 3/16" chromoly tubing for a new project, I know McMasterCarr carries it but their shipping on long pieces is usually more then what the product amount is. Any other place I could look? their are a few metal shops around here that I might stop into to see if they have a distributor or something.

Also, it brazes just like steel brake line right? I have heard that somewhere before, just double checking. Anyone work with it? Anything else I should know?

I can't comment on the brazing part, but you could try onlinemetals.com

Just doing a quick search on Google shows a good many folks brazing Chromoly 4130, but there could be several other considerations to take into account, such as if it is normalized or not?

Chromoly? Cool. Keep us posted on how it goes. Im curious what the benefit over stainless would be? I assume lighter weight?

I picked up 3/16 .035 wall 4130 tubing from my local steel supply for about $1.50 per foot. As far as silver brazing the material, it just needs a little more heat because of increased wall thickness.

The nice thing about using this tubing is that you dont have to clean the galvy coating off before brazing it.

Weight should be nearly the same......unless you go lighter wall.
Not sure I'd want to go thinner for long term durability.

Did you find the chromo to be significantly stiffer then the brake line....like stainless is?

Does Chromoly rust like mild steel or is it more like stainless?

Yeah definitely stiffer than brake line... more like stainless. Chromo takes a little more effort to bend

Chromoly sounds cooler.

No, I have just had a bad run of crappy alloys in the brake tubing I usually buy, most of it will not braze at all. Looking for something different.

Who says you can't braze aluminum?

I just read and article today with someone who has been brazing aluminum. He had a special brazing rod to do it, unfortunately I didn't bookmark the page, but it sounded like it was worth playing around it just for fun.

D-Trail12... now a D-Trail11

brazing AL is just like brazing steel... yes you do need a special braze rod. This joint is as strong as a steel brazed joint.

What type of brazing rod have you been using for Aluminum?
