Why undercut the hexes on these wheels? All my RC4WD wheels are cut like this, not sure why. There's tons of these out there and I haven't heard of hex issues so they must be strong enough. |

I have one that has a cracked hex, it has been that way for a while. Not because of that though. I have been trying to break them, no luck so far!

I think it's because of the manufacturing process of roughing out the hex on a lathe with a hole/counterbore. Then the hexes are formed to the finished shape/size with a broach. The undercut gives the broached chips a chance to break when the tool bottoms out. That's my guess anyway.

Yes I'd agree with Bender. The hexes are broached you can see tool marks in the hex. I don't see any issue with it.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to understand why they're built the way they are. I've cut hexes on my manual mill and rotary table but I always drilled the "corners" then milled from point to point. Never had the fancy stuff at my disposal.  |
