A sticky would be great.

I wish you would because I seen some of your chassis's and they are great you got it down IMO

I've never noticed a difference from when I've cooled it by dunking in water and when I haven't.

I'd think that quenching would harden the material, thus leaving your material brittle. I know for a fact that you shouldn't quench brazed aluminum, because of the risk of cracks forming due to stresses in the metal.

I've only had to purchase one new larger bottle in the last year+. It drys out a little then I just add some water, mix it up and it's good to go.

Awesome movie, you took away some of the mystery of brazing for me. I have been really curious about trying to make a tuber and now I think I might just try this winter.

After searching the net for brazing instructions I found that it is common practice to quench the hot joint to remove the hardened flux from the joint.
I found it to work great, the hotter the joint the better the flux comes off.

I'd say get the trigger top thing for just the mapp. Last time I used the oxy/mapp togeather it got hot real fast and you'll use more gas/oxy than doing it the way I showed.

I'd only use the mapp/oxy set up for thicker metals. Brake line doesn't really need it.

Well I was looking around at the hardware store, and saw two set-ups, one for Mapp and one for Butane. The butane is about one third of the cost of the mapp. Can the butane be used effectively or does it not get hot enough? I'll only ever be using it to braze small stuff like bumpers or maybe some sort of tuber someday.
Thanks,
Tom

Don't even think about getting butane. It'll take you 10X longer to get the parts hot enough. I tried it and hated it.

I'll just post it here as someone else will have the same question. But it's also been answered over and over again. It's also on the home page under tech.

You will want to get:
Mapp gas and torch - Lowes, homedepot will have them.
I highly suggest Harris Safty Silv 56% Or 45% and flux. - get it at your local welding shop or online at Ramwelding.com
3/16 brake line.
clamps and/or vise crips, magnets or other forms of holding things togeather, not necessary but helps.

You'll also want a dremel to make the fishmouts. or I like to use my grinder then clean it up with my dremel. I also have an air die grinder for sanding the edges I will braze, but you can just use sand paper or your dremel.

I think I covered everything.

Oh I don't use a tube bender but you may want to get one some other like using them, but the brake line is easy enough to bend by hand or vise.

I guess DoubleJ doesnt cut his tube.

To add to his list (which is dead on accurate)
- Band Saw, hack saw, dremel (to cut the tubing)
- a good ruler, I use a large L shaped ruler layed down on my bench.
- A small hammer (for making "minor adjustments")
- Angle finder is a nice thing to have
- Pencil and paper to write down measurements.
- For holding, I like to use painters tape on the opposite end.

thats about all i can think of- that should get you going nicely. Some items are not a must have, but make life alot easier.

good luck. dont burn your house down.

Wow, my boss welds and crap everyday, he couldnt explain how to braze to me, (it might of been the fact that he didnt want me to use up all his supplies, lol) Thanks JJ. Ill be using the bosses supplies up in no time. (where did he hide the safety silv 56% and flux)

Default Another Brazing video....

well with the weather turning colder here I decided it was time to start building some tubers again. Always wanted to do a little "how-2" video on brazing since there are soooooo many simple questions on it. here ya go.

First I will show you a simple little "jig" I use sometimes to hold parts in place for brazing. Simple yet effective, two blocks of steel that I picked up at a local machine shop in their scrap pile. I use them alot, very handy.

The part I am making here is a front suspension piece for a new rig. You can see where I brazed on a couple of M3 nuts to the end of the tube.

Now throw some flux on there.

and braze.....

Now this was done using harris flux and safty silv. That is the only como I suggest using.

Used a little too much braze but it will hold just fine...

Finished part....

Installed on tuber....

Enjoy.
