Taig

How are you liking your Taig? I think I am going to settle for a Taig, they are cheap and as little as I am going to use it, it will most likely work fine for me.

Taigs are good for intricate work, the 7x series, grizzy, mircomark need some minor work to work really well.
The grizzly I have has been tweaked quite a bit, brass side plates, lapped bed and ways, all metal gears in headstock, qctp, full carbide insert tools
digital read out, the standard 3 jaw chuck might be bit big for really small work, but my 4" 3 jaw has runout just under .0005, and yes that is the correct reading ,and the 3 jaw is not independent.
I would check the 7x12 yahoo group if your going that route , or even the taig yahoo group ,and someone also mentioned cnczone.

Frank Hoose gives alot of good info, also he has 3 different lathes on that site, the micromark and others with a 7" swing are referred to as 7x , I have a grizzly 7x12 ,they do need some work to be accurate and consistent ,not expensive just lapping of the bed and ways makes a huge difference, then fine tuning, but they will perform out of the box ok.
The standard chuck may be a bit large for small work, and there are smaller chucks aval 2" and larger 4,5" that do fit and work well with the mini lathes.
