Hey Neighbor
read the CNCZONE.com forum

Smithy is ok stuff to, like many things low price it's going to be made in taiwan or Japan. Businesses here work on Design and then to keep cost down they have it made over seas, very sad

not to bright are ya.

Any machinists will tell ya .
I just used my drill press to do a function that a lathe would do
I also use my drill press to do mill work

if you put your material in the chuck of the mill or drill press and place a cutter in the vise then you can trim down the material

Please be careful using a drill press as a mill/lathe. The machine is not meant for the load that those functions create. I have seen (done by myself) some scary stuff when the chuck/bearings fail due to misuse.

Best practice, use a machine or tool for its intended purpose and there will be less trips to the Emergency Room.

Not really safe to use a drill press as a mill or lathe. It can work for really light duty milling/turning of plastic. But, the spindle bearings aren't meant for sideload. As mention earlier, the bearings will fail overtime. Plus, most drill press spindles are just a taper fit, no drawbar to hold the chuck in the spindle. If you apply too much side load to a taper fit, the chuck can pull out while the spindle is on.

You can use a mill as a lathe in the same way you're describing though.

I can keep tolerances at .001 but .0005 is tricky, a lot depends on how you maintain and adjust it.

Uhhhhh yeah! I have to agree on this one but refuse to get in to the pissing match !!!

Long story short........ misuse of tools causes accidents, premature failure, reduced bit life ect ect. Your work will be alot nicer done with the correct tooling as well. Yes you can do it but............

And yes I love my mini mill and lathe! They do cool shit for me, they dont talk back, and they are always there when I need them!
