I got some break line tonight and it has this thick grey coating on it. Is this the coating I have to sad off or is it different. It is steel but you cant even see the steel it almost looks like it was powder coated. I may be able to get pics of it tomorrow

Its probably been Galvanized and yes run some light sand paper over it before you try to do anything with it. Also wear a mask the fumes are highly toxic when its heated or sanded. The only other wierd style of brake line I know of is a very dark brown collor so hopefully I was able to help

It looks like its been sprayed with ceramic paint. It is kind of like the dark grey color of RCC's background. I wasn't sure because all the tube I see on here looks like bare metal

Yes, it would.

I've been faced with the same problem before.

A company called AGS makes the brake line most of us use. I find it at Pep Boys (large auto parts store) it runs about $6 for a 60" piece. No coating.

Yep thats what they call "bendable brake line" was just looking at that stuff the other day. Supposedly that stuff has a high ending tolerance meaning you can bend it by hand and it wont buckle. Dont quote me on that but thats the way its been explained to me. I would go get yourself some good old fashion Brake line, it will most likely be Galvanized but thats just to keep it from rusting.

I have some of that. If you bend it wrong, you can bend it back pretty easy without it buckling.

I'll head to Napa to get the other stuff next time!

The stuff at napa needs to be sanded too!
It's a much tinner galvanized coating but it needs to be removed. It's toxic to burn that stuff and it makes your joint look like crap cause it will start to crackle and discolor and stuff. Also, silver solder will not stick to it at all, but the cheap brass brazing rod does. I just use a 4.5" angle grinder with a flap disc and sand off all of the coating on all tubes of the joint.

I have used both and the type with that thicker coating doesn't braze as well. I sand the whole thing down but the coating must bond pretty good with it because it still doesn't braze as well.

As far as sanding, I usually just get a piece of sand paper and sand the entire piece of brake line before I start cutting. Makes it easier then just sanding the ends before you braze.

Yes, I always used the AAP line, both the straight lengths and the 25ft rolls. Stuff is great to work with.

Oh and about the galvanized coating, after working with it, drink milk. My dad is a welder and where he works I guess thats what they tell you to do after breathing in the fumes or even just handling the galv. coating.
