Ridding the Trx4 of locking diffs.

Is there any aftermarket locker options for the trx4 that would allow me to rid of the locking diffs? I personally have no desire to unlock the diffs and don't want the expense or possible failure of the cables system on my latest build.

Not as of yet.

I want something like that as well. Hopefully the aftermarket comes up with something. I really don't care about unlocking diffs. I just want reliable portals.

I have seen someone who had shimmed their dog engagement on the side to keep it locked, but right now I would imagine the strongest locker you could get would be made by JB Weld as it would lock all the internals. If you just pin it into the locked configuration then all your torque is being transferred through the smaller and likely fragile spider gears in the diff.

I love my lockable diffs, but if you really wanna get rid of that option, Just JB weld it and be done.

Yeah jb weld never worked at least back in 2005 the days before buy it crawlers. Just crumbled over time due to torque.

I'll probably just lock the linkage with a small threaded rod or make a collar to lock the clutch out. Just seeing if there was a direct fit option. Thanks.

Re: Ridding the Trx4 of locking diffs.

The problem with how they lock standard or via shimming the lock ring is all the torque on the axle is going to be focused through spider gears from the side with the slider to the opposite side. Stock it only locks one output from the diff to the diff cup, it relies in the spider gears to lock the other output to the first output, there has been at least one spider gear failure on facebook. If you were going to lock the ring to the cup I would still recommend some sort of adhesive inside to hopefully help those spider gears to be a bit more robust

I've easily JB welded at least 50 RC diffs over time and never had a single issue. Some trucks with well over 100 hours of use. You didn't put enough in there if you had an issue.

Dittohead made a shim to lock it internally and posted pictures in TRX4 forum. "thumbsup" JB Weld inside diffcup couldn't hurt.

X2, clean all gears, diffcup, etc super well, properly mixed JB Weld and never had a problem for years. Liberally coat every part inside diffcup, one piece at a time, add more JB Weld all around, install next part, and so on until it's fully assembled. JB Weld should slightly squish out of diffcup during assembly and you will have to do careful cleanup before it hardens. "thumbsup"

Yeah I figure it will be a matter of time before some locker kit is released. This diff failure is coming to be a common issue so likely someone will market it. Don't really want to have it all glued together when it comes time to open the carrier.

Re: Ridding the Trx4 of locking diffs.

You could always use a bit of cellophane / saran wrap on the ring gear side so even after the JB weld dries you can unbolt and replace the ring gear if needed, would turn the main part of the diff into somewhat of a spool and still retain the ability to replace just the ring gear if it gets damaged?

Traxxas makes a diff lock AND a single speed...link below!

Bought the spools a few months ago. Would highly recommend. Perfect part for the job. I knew it would only take some time before something was released. Traxxas really went above and beyond my expectations with the engineering of the spools.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ed49760c50.jpg

We purchased two sets of the spools for both the RTR and Kit Bronco

Along with the single speed transmission upgrade

I installed the spools and the single speed but went back to the 2 speed. The spools are nice and a bargain for what you get though.

how are the traxxas spools holding up for people ive seen a pic or two on face book with them breaking around the bolting points?

Why are you eliminating the locking diffs? I thought that was one of the big selling points of the TRX4? Portals, diffs, and 2-speed was the major selling points when I was shopping crawlers.

I ended up adding the spool to the front and kept the unlocking functionality for the rear only. The extra steering when unlocking the rear comes in handy.

For me I'm running the Trx4 axles on a Scx10ii chassis. I didn't want to bother with mounting additional servos or the additional weight, possible point of failure.

For me mine is strictly a comp rig and the micro servos are just too big of a failure point. It's hard to do well with an open diff because of a servo failure, trust me
