Default Hw1080 and stock micro servos

What’s up guys? I new here so take it easy on me. First off I recently got a new trx-4 bronco and I love it. This is my first hobby grade rc and I’m a total noob so I’m looking for some advice. Since I’m still rolling around with a stock steering servo and Servo horn I am eager to upgrade. From what I’ve read I’m going to eventually have to upgrade the esc so I’m planning on doing that before I buy a bec to power the new Servo. I’m I’m planning on getting a hobby wing 1080. Will this still work with the stock micro servos used to switch gears and lock/unlock the diffs? Also what would be a good Servo to upgrade to without completely breaking the bank? Thanks in advance!

First, Welcome to RCC! The HW Quicrun WP1080s internal BEC is adjustable for 6v or 7.4v. The stock TRX4 electronics run at 6v so just set the 1080 to 6v and you are done. For steering servo upgrades, the Savox 1230SG is rated at 500oz/in at 6v making it a nice match with the stock electronics without the need for an external BEC. The Savox 1230SG is available on ebay in numerous listings some include a free aluminum servo horn and free shipping.

For example:

The HW1080 is basically a plug and play install but it comes with an XT60 battery connector, which isn't bad, but you will need an adapter or convert your batteries. You will need to do some soldering for motor bullet connectors and then follow the instructions to calibrate the throttle and you will want to use the included programming card to adjust the ESC's internal BEC voltage to 6v, battery type and other parameters to fit your driving style. Just a side note, the stock ESC includes a red JST connector to provide battery power to accessories which the 1080 does not. You can just add a JST connector to the battery plug if you need to keep it.

The only thing you'll have to solder is the battery connector of your choice. The 1080 comes with an XT60 which is what I use personally so it's great. The wires are really long, but I make it work.

Installing an ESC is pretty simple, though you will need to solder.

You'll likely need to swap some plugs so you can connect your battery to the ESC. The 1080 comes with a XT60 connector which is a great plug to use, I'd keep that and if you need to change anything switch the plugs on your batteries. You will also need some bullet connectors (for the motor) of some sort unless you solder the leads directly to the motor. Unplug the old ESC from the receiver and motor and plug in the new ESC to the receiver and motor, mount it with double sided tape or dual lock.
Run the wiring to the receiver, calibrate it using the instructions in the manual and then dial in the settings you want.

Post up a thread in the TRX-4 section showing photos of your new Bronco as well as the changes and additions you make. This general "Traxxas Crawlers" section isn't as active as the TRX-4 section which can be found here: Scale Rigs Brand Specific Tech - Traxxas TRX-4 at RCCrawler.com

Can I solder on the traxxas plug from the original esc?

If you can solder yes, but i would keep the xt60 cause it's more standard and lipos are much cheaper. Also there are adapter available to connect the traxxas batterie to xt60

I have the TRX-4 Defender with locking differentials and the 2 speed. I use a Hobbywing 1080, a Savox 0251 servo and all works fine for me. Eventually I plan to replace the steering servo with something stronger, but for now it's okay. I'm a XT90 guy so I had to remove the XT60.

Welcome to the forum!
