There's a lot more information over here:

Scale Rigs Brand Specific Tech - Traxxas TRX-4 at RCCrawler.com

Personally, I threw on a set of extremely low profile SSD bumpers and some aluminum beadlocks with different tires after painting the roof white and then shooting some matte clear over the silver.

The bumpers give me better approach and departure angles..."thumbsup"

Light kit is nice and fun and functional. The wife and I enjoy night crawling in the backyard. Neighbors probably think we’re nuts. RC Girl, and RC Review YouTube channels have good recommendations for defender upgrades as do others.

Just like you, Traxxas Fanboy, I live in the Front Range area here in Colorado. I switch back and forth between Proline Krawlers and Super Swampers on my Defender. I prefer the G8 compound since it means not having to worry quite as much about tire wear when I shift it into 2nd gear.

A metal steering horn. You can get the traxxas one for the TRX on Amazon for 5-10 bucks. It will be perfect.

That is a heavy body. It is always better to loose weight than add it. Get rid of everything you can. When you ad scale items or accessories try to add them as low as possible. You are better off with a heavier bumper than a bunch of accessories in a roof rack.

Add weight to the axles or wheels (mixed opinions on wheels). I like the brass rings in wheels and weight hubs I comp, not trail. For trailing I probably wouldn't want rotating weight in the wheels but for comping I do.

TRX electronics are not great. When you think about a new steering servo I would strongly recommend direct power. TRX electronics are rated at 6 volts, strong servos like more than 6 volts and more amps then that ESC can offer. Some people have no issues with running more power than 6 volts. My receiver failed after I ran additional voltage, maybe coincidence? You can get a BEC to power the servo and BYPASS to limit power to the receiver for non direct power servos but it is just easier just to go direct power.
