Default Emaxx Diff used as a tranmission

Yesterday afternoon I was thinking about different transmssions out there. I was looking at one of my diffs and though I could use this as a tranmission. So started building a case and a motor bracket to hold it all together. I will get finishing it today and post more pictures. I have a spool inside.

Thank you, I have no idea if it will work. I still have to finish it. I have about $10.00 into it plus a little metal. I post more later when it is finished. I still have to make the mounting brackets and make the motor bracket adjustable so I can try different pinions...

Now if my math is right. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am running a 72 / 9 Spur & pinion

72 / 9 = 8

8 x 2.84 = 22.72

22.72 x 2.84 = 64.52 final

I forgot to answer your question. Well I guess the case and bracket was not to hard to build, I use 20 gauge, I first used a 1 1/2 hole saw and cut out two disk, then used 3/4" hole saw and cut out the middle holes. That is my case. Then i used a hand tin cutter and cut out the bracket. Bent into the shape I needed. I have about 1 1/2 -2 hours making it.

How did you attach the spur to the pinion input?

Be prepared to be going through a lot of spur gears. The mesh of pinion and spur gears looks horrible, only a tiny bit of pinion and spur meshing, at least that's how it looks.

I too have thought about converting the diff into a tranny but after you think about it there just won't be enough torque. The more gears in the tranny the easier the motor will have to work. Plus the Maxx diffs are not even a 3:1 ratio... for that small of a setup you'd need something closer to 200:1 for it to be efficient enough for crawler use.

Go for it though, see if you can make it work.

Trike Kid: The gears are not as bad as it looks. My camera is a pile of _ _ _ _. It looks like it going to work okay.

toyofast: I am thinking the same, did you see my math? Did I do it right? I was also thinking I may need to add a gear reduction unit to it. I will try it this way and add the unit if need be. If that does not work, then I am out about 3 hours and I will cut the shaft off and the diff.

chaotic_life: Again that is the picture... My camera is a pile of _ _ _ _.

AdamF: Yes it is welded.

I did not look at any math, I hate math outside of work:-P

If you add a gear reduction you might as well go out and purchase a real transmission to have something that will be reliable. All that work to have something that is questionable while a real tranny could be had for less the price of your time involved into this project.

I've seen rbgerrish try to build a similar setup but rather than with a Maxx dif he stacked 2 GD-600's together mated to a German t-case box. In the end the ratio was fine but the ability for the number of gears to work just didn't cut it.

rbgerrish sells 'Pede trannys pretty cheap

even if it doesnt work, maybe it will inspire someone else to build something that does. i think it is a good idea. if nobody ever tried new things, we would be still be driving stock clods. thats my $.01
