Question 1st gear, or second.....

Seems like I've seen posts suggesting the E-Maxx tranny be locked in either one....so what's the consensus? Or is there one?

I'll be running an Integy 55t lathe motor with a GD600 2.5:1, and so far I've collected pinions of 9-12t, and I've got a 72t spur. I'm still undecided on tires, but Moabs are looking like what I'll start with...

Any suggestions....lock it in 1st or 2nd?

Most lock it into first, those ones that lock it into second are usaully racers.

I run a 55t with a 72/10 gearing and that is actually alomst to slow for my liking I think that the gd600 is going to put you way to slow and you will not have enough wheel speed to get you up ledges and climbs. THe moabs are great on the rocks I love mine.

Be like everyone else and run the GD600, 27t Johnson motor and start with a 12t off the GD. Much better set up, just costs a bit more.

Wellllllllll.....I really don't like to be like everyone else.......but do like gear reduction, and its benefits......the MM's could be a choice, but are back orderred again, a Johnson, I have no idea where to even search for one....
So, thnking back to the MM's, 22 turn, probably operate inthe low 20K rpm range, unloaded....but if ya want ball bearings, you buy them separatel, and install....hope you don't break a "tab."
How bout we do a 21 turn, double wound, removeale end bell, factory Ball Bearings, 22.9K rpm range, for $18.00....

I orderred one of these, think I'll give it a try.

Remember the reason why people like the MM's is not just because of the number of turns or RPM's it's also because they are 550 style and tend to give more torque.... the motor you linked to is a normal mild modified motor but is 540 style so the difference between that one and a MM will be noticable.

I have at least one or two MM's sitting in a box

I hear ya Toyofast, and all this 540, 550 stuff is a learning curve....something I guess we're all supposed to know as soon as we walk in the door....but until you said something, I didn't know the MM's were 550's, just like I still don't know where to look for Johnsons.....

And it is that ignorance, that helps me think outside the box, and look for viable alternatives. You maybe right, the Raven may not be as good as the MM....but since I don't have 2 MM's sittng new in there boxes, and since theyre still B.O.'ed , I'm sorta compelled to look for other options. Combine that with the fact that I don't mind experimenting....and I'm having fun. Fact is, I may even re-wind a few of these myself before it's all said and done with...did it on slot cars years ago with excelent success, so it won't be anything new.

What would everyone do if Kyosho stopped production of the MM's? If the elusive Johnson's dissappeared? Eventually, all exsting inventories and stashes will be used up.....betcha there would be a scramble then to find alternatives....whatcha think ?????????????
