Default Rear Disconnect Using the E-maxx Trans

The perliminary drawings are done. I am starting the prototype next week. This rear driveline disconnect will be all internal. To lock and unlock you will have to use a servo. So if you have all three channels used up you will need a 4 channel radio or two radios. It took a better part of a month off and on to figure it out. But I think it's good to go now. As soon as it's up and running I post up a video..

Just the design is secret not the idea. But I'll throw out this. It uses a two piece shaft, and two low speed gears.

This is true so maybe I sould share now. So here you go. What I'm going to do is make the main output shaft a two piece shaft. Install the low speed gears and counter gear in the high speed location (front location on the trans). Then take a shift collar and cut it in half to lock in the front gear set. (now the front is locked into drive all the time) Then use another shift collar to lock and unlock the second rear gear. With the main shaft being to different shafts spinning independent of each other the rear will spin with out the shift collar locked in. What Ya think

So you talking about inside the trans??

If so, you will need a carrier bearing to hold the main output shaft in place. I thought about the same thing last year, but figured it was way to much work for what i wanted to do

Did you try it? Don't think a carrier bearing is needed the way I'm going to make the shafts.

Well you may be doing it different than I was thinking. I was going to cut the main shaft in 2 and use the shifting rod still. The shifting rod would slide on the shaft to engage and disengage. The only problem I had is when it disengaged the one side, it would have dropped down a bit , making realignment a PITA. So the carrier bearing would be needed.

This would give you front wheel drive only.

Yes you are right ,but what if you did this. Take shaft #1 the front shaft closest to the front axle. Cut it where it is machined down for the rear low speed gear where the bearing buts up to. Then linebore it to say 1/8" just for kicks.. Then take another shaft and cut it in half. Then turn down the second shaft to slide into the first shaft. Then no need for a carrier bearing, the shaft is the carrier. I talked it over with engineer at work and he said no problem because there is no real load on it.

Was thinking about it but I don't have the toolage to do it. Sounds like it should work. Give it a shot and if it does, make up a conversion kit.

yeah I never thought about running a solid rod down the center,Hmmm. I have this 2nd trans sitting here, so it may be time to just mess with it

I'm 95% sure it will work. I know I can buy the shafts but what about the low speed gear and the shift collars? Two new trans will cost $80.00 each. Nothing on ebay either.
