Default IFS Crawler

O.K. From the world of crawling a real truck a solid axle IS best. I was going to build my EMAXX IFS front and rear into a solid axle and link it up.

After reading a few post about kevinlongisland's Maxx and seeing how well his modified IFS does has got me to thinking.

I feel it would be easier for me to build some custom one off A-arms that might just be able to produce massive amounts of travel. I think I'm going to try it. My question is..........

What would be the shock of choice?

I would want a good long travel shock that won't break the bank. I've got to keep reminding myself this is a hobby, not a career

There are several reasons that "solid axles" are used for crawling heres a couple

1To get a ifs truck to have massive amounts of travel you are going to
have extreme driveline angles from the differential to the wheels that
will for sure not jive with cvds and you would snap maxx sliders in a
hurry. I have lots of proof.

2. When a solid axle articulates there is a fixed amount of room between the pumpkin or bottom of differential and the ground this is good somewhere between 2 and 4". When a ifs truck "articulates" that center height is a variable and moves up or down depending on where in the travel it is. thus making it extremely easy to high center as your diff could be only 1/2 or 1/4 " off the ground not what you want in rock crawling.

I would seriously consider making your ifs truck onto a fixed axle. I have done this on two maxxes. Lock out the arms in the tallest safe position. It does take a bit of fabrication but the results are unbelieveable. i have about four inches of clearance under the diffs with cut and narrowed bfts. I should have pics up in a few days. Feel free to ask questions if you are interested in the conversion. good luck.

Hackster one of the main benefits of ifs is the diff clearance. At one point on my e-maxx crawler I made I could fit a soda can under the diffs, I'd like to see a clod or any solid axel truck do that. But I do agree that solid is a better platform overall.

he was saying that onthe IFS, the diff moves up and down, just not as much as the SA..when one wheel goes up,the diff will usually stay where its at or raise up just a bit. it will not always get tilted up like a straight axle does

You're a big boy; you know why IFS sucks and why you shouldn't have it!!!

As for shocks; its all in how they are mounted, you can mount them in on the links or closer to the center of the axle. It'll make the spring rate seem softer and give you a ton of travel out of a 2" travel shock.

Yes,I know why my IFS sucked on my Toyota. This is the way I'm looking at it. My EMAXX,if scaled up to the same size as my Toyota, would have probly a little more "flex" than it does now with the SAS and All Pro springs. I may still end up linkin mine up. Just thinking about it now cuz the EMAXX'es IFS does work very well if you look at it and compare it concidering the scale of things.

Buliding an IS suspension rig can be done. Walker Evans (I belive it was or is Walker Evans) , his full size rock crawler is IS.

i say build the IS crawler and if you feel like you need more make it into solid axle. building the dam things is more then half the fun of it.

I didn't even build my chassis (Thanks Brian) but I am having to piece everything else together and it is the best part. Btw brian, the old maxx (geckzilla) is coming together pretty good. I need a few more drivelines, shocks, steering and that is it.
